Following Janet’s Shadow
ELIJAH’S POV:
I grabbed my jacket, my keys, and one last look at the sleeping children, kissed them on their forehead before rushing out of the house.
Ten minutes later, black SUVs pulled up front. I slid into one of them beside my godfather. The vehicle sped off immediately.
The ride felt endless.
My heart battled between terrifying dread and explosive hope. What if she was there? What if I was finally close enough to touch her again? What if I was too late? What if she’s hurt and in pain?
No one spoke as we drove through narrowing roads, the city lights fading into thick trees and darkness.
Finally, my godfather raised a hand. “There. That’s it.”
The cottage sat isolated in a clearing, It looked abandoned, aged wood, broken windows, overgrown weeds choking the porch. No lights. No sound. My pulse thundered violently.
“This is it,” I whispered to myself hearing the sound of my heart beat pumping “I feel it.”
“Wait here.” My godfather sternly said with both his words and his eyes and I sucked my teeth but obeyed
The officers moved swiftly, surrounding the structure. Weapons were drawn. My godfather signaled, and the door was kicked in with a deafening crack.
They rushed inside but in less than a minute, they returned and I watched the disappointed look on my uncle’s face. The cottage was empty.
Hannah wasn’t there. Janet wasn’t there. Their mother wasn’t there. I was still surprised that her parents were among these crazy games as when the police got to their house, no one was found.
I got out of the car and headed inside the cottage. The air inside was stale, damp, layered with coldness and old dust. There were signs of recent movement, a chair knocked over, a half-empty water bottle on the floor, footprints in the dirt.
