HANNAH’S POV:: 

The morning after the show I slept until nine and when I came downstairs Elijah was at the kitchen island with two laptops open and a legal pad covered in handwriting and three different coffee cups in various states of emptiness arranged in a loose triangle that suggested he had been awake for some time. He looked up when I appeared and said, “Good morning. The coverage is extraordinary. Lucas has sent nineteen separate articles. I stopped counting. Also Lily posted a video from backstage and it has two million views.” 

I stood in the kitchen doorway in my pajamas and looked at him. “You have been working since what time?” 

“Since about six,” he said, with the expression of a man who knew that was slightly unreasonable and was not going to apologize for it. “Sit down. I made you tea and there is toast. And I have been talking to the legal team since seven.” 

I sat down. “Tell me.” 

He had printed several of the more significant pieces of coverage and put them in a loose pile on the table. I picked up the top one. It was from an international fashion magazine I had been following, it is a publication that represented a very specific type of critical credibility, and its review of the collection was three pages long and the headline used the word landmark. I read the first two paragraphs and had to put it down because the third paragraph mentioned my mother by name and described what the collection was doing as an act of reclamation and I was not ready to read that word quite yet. 

“Okay,” I said, putting it down carefully. “I will read all of it later. Tell me about the legal team.” 

He turned one of the laptops toward me. On the screen was a document, several pages, dense with text and structured in the way that legal documents always are, building an argument in layers from the ground up. Castellan and Reeve,” he said. “They are considered the best IP litigation team in the world at the moment. We had a preliminary conversation last week and this is their first read of the folder documents.” 

I looked at the document. The summary at the top said what I needed to know. Strong evidentiary foundation. Original partnership agreement clearly establishes co-founding status. Secondary contract shows material misrepresentation. Original sketches with provenance documentation could be decisive. Timeline of erasure demonstrable. Viable international claim.
