The Unexpected Twist
MARY’S POV:
A sudden, loud noise boomed out from the main hallway.
The heavy sound of security personnel hitting their plastic shields against the wall echoed down the corridor, drowning out my voice. The hospital security team had finally arrived at the fourth floor, their heavy boots stepping firmly on the floor tiles as they barked out loud orders. Within two minutes, the guards began grabbing people by their arms and clearing the room. The blue–haired teenager was pulled backward out the door while still yelling at his phone screen, and the rest of the crowd was pushed out right behind him, their camera lights flickering until the door was cleared.
In the rush to empty the space, several glass flower vases and paper food containers sitting on the side tables were knocked onto the floor. Water splashed across the clean tiles, mixing with crushed flower petals and broken glass. A big bundle of red roses sat ruined under a heavy boot print near the wall, and an open lunch box had spilled sandwiches and sliced fruit all over the ground.
Just like that, the small room went dead silent.
The sudden quiet was heavy. I could hear the sound of my own slow breathing. From far down the hallway, the faint sounds of the hospital came drifting back in, the distant beep of a heart monitor, the hum of the air vents, and the quiet footsteps of staff going about their night.
One of the tall security guards stepped back into the doorway to check on us. He was a broad- shouldered man with a serious face and a clean dark uniform. He looked around at the absolute mess on the floor, then turned his gaze toward the bed where Vesper was lying.
“Miss Vesper, since you are a well–known public figure, you really need to refrain from causing this kind of public disturbance in a medical facility,” he said in a stern voice.
Vesper looked like her whole world had just ended.
She lay curled up sideways on the mattress, her arms wrapped tightly around herself while her face. stayed hidden in the flat pillow. Her body kept shaking with small, silent sobs. She looked completely defeated and exposed. I could hear the muffled sounds of her crying through the thin fabric, the pathetic noise of a woman who had been caught red–handed and had nowhere left to run.
Through her heavy crying, her choked voice squeaked out from under the pillow. “Everyone in the public has always been so nice to me… People are good… unless someone goes around telling them terrible lies… Those people must have come to this room on purpose just to attack my character… I have no idea why Mary hates my guts so much… I saved her own mother–in–law from getting hurt today, but all I get in return is a knife stabbed right into my back… I am already lying here with a broken body, but instead of getting proper rest at the hospital, all I find is more cruelty…”
Her voice got quieter and weaker with every single word she spoke, trailing off into a pathetic whisper. Her body went soft against the mattress, her fingers slowly letting go of the pillowcase as her arms dropped down to her sides. She let her head roll back onto the bed, her eyes fluttering shut as if she were passing out from pure pain.
