Where Motherhood Meets War
HANNAH’S POV:
THAT SAME DAY:
“Hurry…. Are we there yet?” I asked repeatedly with each stop as my driver drove to the hospital.
The drive felt like an eternity and it was about fifteen minutes drive from the office. My hands wouldn’t stop shaking, no matter how tightly I clenched them on my lap. The driver kept glancing at me through the rearview mirror, probably afraid I’d faint before we even arrived.
He simply answered calmly and with concern every time I asked a question, “We are almost there ma’am…..She will be fine.” My chest tightened with every second that passed and with each reassuring word he offered.
Amelia. My sweet Amelia. I couldn’t stop my mind from replaying all the worst-case scenarios.her lying / unconscious, hooked up to tubes, or worse… I pressed my fist against my mouth to choke down a sob. The other driver had simply called and announced that she had passed out and he was rushing her to the hospital as they were getting response.
What if she….No… I can’t think all of that…I need to be strong.
When we finally pulled up, I was out of the car before the driver even fully stopped. My heels clattered against the marble floor of the emergency wing, the smell of antiseptic and something metallic hitting me at once. Too sterile. Too cold. Too cruel.
“Amelia Jones,” I almost yelled at the receptionist, my voice cracking. “Seven years old, brought in a few minutes ago. Where is she?”
The young woman blinked up at me, startled. “Room 204, ma’am. Down that hall.”
I didn’t even thank her. My feet carried me, almost flying, down the corridor until I saw Andrew outside the room. He was sitting on a chair, legs bouncing, his hands clasped so tightly they were turning red. I thought he was alone but a slight feeling of relief filled me when I saw the driver standing across.
“Andrew!” I called, and he jumped to his feet.
“Mummy!” He ran into my arms, and I dropped to my knees to hold him. His little body trembled, his breath hitching in hiccups.
“She just… she just fell, Mum,” he stammered. “We were drawing, and then she said she was dizzy, and then she just..” His small hands waved frantically, searching for the right words. “She just fell.”
