The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 42

The Blood That Betrays Me

HANNAH’S POV:

The doctor nodded. “She’s awake but weak. Just be gentle.”

“Thank you doctor.” We shook hands firmly and he walked off.

I pushed the door open slowly, Andrew tugging at my hand.

There she was. My Amelia, lying on the hospital bed, her skin pale, her little lips slightly chapped. But her eyes lit up when she saw us.

“Mummy….” Her voice was barely above a whisper and my heart shattered into a million pieces.

I rushed to her side, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “I’m here, darling. I’m right here.”

Andrew climbed onto the bed carefully, lying beside her and taking her hand. “Don’t scare me like that again,” he told her fiercely, his small voice shaking. “I thought you were… gone.”

Amelia gave him a tired smile. “Sorry, Andy. I didn’t mean to.”

Watching them broke something inside me. Two halves of my heart lying side by side, clinging to each other. I stroked their hair, tears spilling before I could stop them.

“I’ll do anything,” I whispered, almost a prayer. “Anything to keep you safe.”

The nurse came in to check Amelia’s vitals, murmuring instructions about signing consent forms for the transfusion. My hands shook as I signed. I didn’t care what it took, what it cost. I would bleed myself dry if it meant Amelia could live.

As I stepped back into the corridor for a moment to collect myself, I pressed my back against the wall, covering my mouth to muffle the sobs. Why her? Why not me? I would take every ounce of her pain if I could.

“I called Mr Lucas if that’s okay with you and informed Miss Maya when she called since you weren’t picking up.” The driver said, coming from behind me and I cleaned my tears and nodded.

“Mama?” Andrew tugged on my blouse. His eyes were wet but determined. “Will Amelia get better?”

“Yes,” I answered firmly also reminding myself, crouching down to his level. “She will. We’ll make sure she gets everything she needs. But you have to be strong too, for her. Can you do that for me?”

He nodded hard, lips trembling. “I’ll protect her. Always.”

I hugged him tightly and kissed the top of his heart. “That’s my brave boy.”

A second later, we both turned when we heard, “Hannah, Andrew, where’s my Amelia?” Lucas asked from the distance in the corridor, walking hastily with his tie loosened and his white sleeves rolled up, and his eyes red.
