The Ride Home
‘ALISTAIR’S POV:
+15 Banus
Without giving me any warning, she suddenly threw her arms right around my shoulders, pressing her body against mine as her soft lips brushed right against my ear. I had to tilt my head way back just to see the road in. front of us. My view of the dark street was almost completely blocked by her head, but it did not seem to matter much because we were already turning into the long driveway. The familiar tall black gates were sitting just up ahead and open, and the bright porch lights of the main house were shining through the dark trees.
“Take it easy,” I told her, keeping my voice completely calm but firm. “Why are you getting so excited over a stupid video? Just sit back and let me drive the car. We are almost at the front steps-”
Bang!
The front bumper of my car slammed hard into a heavy metal object.
The violent impact shook through the entire frame of the vehicle, throwing my body forward toward the leather steering wheel. I heard a terrifying crunch of twisting steel doors, the loud screeching of heavy rubber tires sliding on gravel, and the sudden pop of shattering glass. My chest slammed forward into the seatbelt, knocking all the air right out of my lungs.
Vesper screamed out loud and wrapped her arms even tighter around my neck, burying her face into my suit jacket as her body shook. She had zero reason to be standing out here in the middle of the dark driveway, sitting right in the direct path of my incoming vehicle.
My brain completely froze up for a second. I did not even want to unbuckle my seatbelt to step out into the cold air.
“Oh my sweet goodness… did we just run right into a real person?” Vesper gasped right against my neck, her voice sounding high, sharp, and full of panic. “Why on earth did that strange man suddenly run straight into the front of our car like that?”
So the man had intentionally run right into the path of my moving vehicle on purpose?
Hearing her say that instantly eased my mind. My logical thinking returned right away. Of course that was what happened. It was probably some dirty drunk person, some random trespasser, or some complete fool who had wandered onto my private land and walked right into my hood. It was not my fault at all. It was not something I needed to stress over. I had been driving down my own driveway completely normally. He was the idiot who had
