The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 48

Blood Doesn’t Lie (2)

ELIJAH’S POV:

I was so surprised that I could only chuckle and step back calling my driver to go get it and in less than ten minutes he was with it. I kept watching tensed that Hannah might return and yell at me.

“You came back! And I smell the fries.” She said in a sing song voice with excitement and her face lit up like a child on Christmas Day.

I laughed under my breath and placed the paper bag beside her. “Don’t tell your mom.”

She giggled and took a huge bite, ketchup smearing the corner of her lip. She looked so much like Hannah that t made my chest ache. The same determined spark in her eyes, the same gentle stubbornness. I couldn’t stop staring.

“What’s your name again?” she asked between bites, staring at me like she was douzy, and I knew she was not even going to remember tomorrow.

“Elijah,” I answered softly, feeling strange saying it aloud.

“Elijah,” she repeated thoughtfully, like she was trying the name on her tongue. “You look like Andrew. Are you friends with my mum?.”

I chuckled, trying to hide how her words hit me. “Andrew’s your brother?”

“Twin brother,” she corrected proudly. “He’s only older by three minutes. He thinks that means he gets to tell me what to do.”

I smiled at that. “Sounds familiar.”

She tilted her head. “Do you have twins?”

The question caught me off guard. “No,” I murmured. “But I think I would’ve liked that.”

She nodded solemnly, then continued eating. “You talk like my mom sometimes,” she pointed out, chewing thoughtfully.

I couldn’t even breathe. “Really?”

“Yeah,” she said, smiling. “She says ‘yeah’ like that. Like she doesn’t really mean it.”

That tiny observation so innocent, it nearly broke me.

She shouldn’t have noticed something like that at her age. Hannah had a very smart child.

We sat in silence after that. I watched her eat, color a little, and talk about her school and how Andrew always cheats at board games. She was radiant, so full of life, even hooked to IVs.

When she finally started dozing off, her little head lolling against the pillow, I tucked the blanket closer around her. I should’ve left right then.

But my gaze landed on the brush sitting on the bedside table. A few strands of her light brown hair glimmered under the faint fluorescent light.

Before I knew what I was doing, I reached for it.

My heart was pounding, guilt clawing at my throat. It was wrong violating even but I needed to know. I needed to stop wondering every time I closed my eyes.

1 slipped the hair into a small plastic bag I carried in my wallet for documents and tucked it into my pocket.

“Thank you for staying with me, Da…” she trailed off in her slumber and my heart literally stopped at the fact that she was about to utter those words.

Was she about to call me ‘Dad?”

As I left the room, I looked back one last time.
