The First Time They Met Him
HANNAH’S POV:
My heart squeezed painfully. I’d known this would happen and I don’t think I would ever bring myself to tell my kids what their father had done to me. “I understand,” I said softly. “You don’t have to talk to him if you don’t want to. I just… want your to come with me. Just to see him.”
Amelia looked uncertain, biting her lip. “What if he doesn’t like us?”
I smiled through the ache in my chest. “There’s no way he won’t. He’s going to love you both. I promise.”
They didn’t respond. Just sat there quiet, withdrawn, and older than their age for a brief moment.
I kissed the both of them on their forehead and said, “No matter what happens, I’m always here and it’s always going to be us but you two don’t deserve to be deprived of a father simply because of my past issue with him, okay? But I love you two with everything in me and you’re my entire world, please don’t ever forget that.”
They both looked at me with sad eyes and I was processing just hearing myself and how I sounded like I was going somewhere. So I took a seat in between them and they leaned on me quietly.
The drive to the park was quiet. The kind of silence that filled the car like fog. I kept glancing at them through the rearview mirror Amelia staring out the window, humming softly under her breath, Andrew with his headphones on, pretending not to care.
My heart raced with every mile. I had dressed simply white blouse, jeans, hair pulled into a neat ponytail but I couldn’t shake the nerves. My fingers kept gripping the steering wheel tighter every time I thought about Elijah’s face from last night. His tone when he said, Be there tomorrow.
What if this was a mistake?
What if he said something cruel again, or worse demanded the children like they were possessions?
I parked the car slowly by the curb, next to the playground. The air was crisp, the park buzzing with weekend life families on picnic blankets, joggers, kids laughing near the swings. The smell of fresh grass and ice-cream filled
the air.
“We’re here,” I said softly. Neither of them responded.
Amelia fiddled with her jacket zipper while Andrew just climbed out wordlessly, stuffing his hands into his pockets. I forced a smile and followed behind them. “Do you both want ice cream first?”
No answer.
We walked down the cobblestone path leading toward the pond. Every second felt heavier. I kept scanning the park for him, not sure if I wanted to find him or not.
But I was secretly hoping he didn’t back out simply because I had already told the kids and it would be way too heartbreaking if he didn’t show up.
Then I saw him.
Standing near the benches by the pond, hands in his pockets, in a black sweater and jeans. His hair slightly tousled by the wind. He looked older somehow, but not weaker. The same posture, the same alluring presence.
Amelia followed my gaze and whispered, “Is that him?”
“Yes,” I breathed.
Andrew’s expression hardened. “He looks like someone from a commercial.”
