Planting Doubt
JANET POV:
“Good evening,” she replied softly, her tone polite but guarded. “We weren’t expecting you.”
It was only right she was distant especially after how I acted at the restaurant, she had never seen me like that “I know,” I said, walking closer. “I needed to talk to you both of you.”
That got Mr. Martinez’s attention. He lowered the paper, adjusting his glasses and he had a bored look on his face like he always had. “What is it this time, Janet?”
He was an handsome man and if he had just given me the wrong look once, I would have taken Mrs Martinez’s place and show off to the world, but he always looked so tired of me.
“Can we… talk privately? Please?” I asked.
Mrs. Martinez exchanged a wary glance with her husband before nodding toward the long couch. “Sit.”
I obeyed, crossing my legs and pretending confidence, though my pulse was racing.
“I wanted to apologize,” I began, voice carefully measured. “For the way I behaved the other day. I shouldn’t have raised my voice at you, Mrs. Martinez, or said the things I said. I was upset, emotional, and I took it out on you.”
Mrs. Martinez’s eyes softened slightly. “You were upset,” she repeated slowly, “because of Hannah.”
“Yes,” I admitted, lowering my gaze. “Because of her.”
The room fell silent for a moment, only the ticking of the antique clock filling the air.
Then, as planned, I exhaled shakily and looked up, letting my expression crumble into something vulnerable. ” Did she ask to meet you at the restaurant?”
Mrs. Martinez blinked, caught off guard. “No, I asked to meet her, why?”
Well…that’s a turn of events but I could still go with the script I had planned.
