The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 90

Step One

JANET’S POV:

“No, please, let me finish,” I said quickly, feigning desperation. “You both need to know what you’re letting into your lives again. She left Elijah. Once. She left knowing she had kids growing her, disappeared for years, and now she’s back acting like she’s some perfect mother. And everyone’s letting her. Elijah’s letting her.”

Mrs. Martinez was silent, staring at the photos as if trying to decode them.

I pressed on. “I tried to move on, you know. I really did. But how do you move on when the woman who destroyed your beautiful relationship is suddenly being painted as some angel? When she’s sitting across from the mother who once promised she’d never let her back in?”

Her eyes flicked up at me then, startled.

Yes, there it is, I thought. The hesitation. The guilt.

“You promised me,” I whispered, lowering my tone to something soft and wounded. “You said you’d make sure Elijah and I got back on track. You said she’d never be a part of his life again.”

Mrs. Martinez’s fingers tightened around her teacup. “I said that before I knew everything.”

“Everything?” I laughed humorlessly. “Like what, that she’s good at playing the victim? She’s been doing that all her life. She’s manipulative, she’s cunning, and she’s using the kids to keep Elijah tied to her.”

Mr. Martinez cleared his throat, his voice firm but uncertain. “Janet, that’s enough. You’re making accusations without proof.”

“Without proof?” I repeated, feigning hurt as I turned my phone toward him again. “Then tell me why Elijah suddenly refuses to take a DNA test.”

That made them both go still.

“He refused?” Mrs. Martinez asked quietly.

“I heard it myself,” I lied smoothly. “Someone suggested it and he shut it down immediately. Said it was insulting. Why would it be insulting unless he’s hiding something? Unless… he’s not sure?”

She didn’t respond, and I could see the doubt beginning to form the flicker of something dark in her expression.

I went in for the kill.

“Look,” I said gently, “I know how this sounds. You think I’m jealous. Maybe a little bitter. But I swear to you, I just want Elijah happy. And I know Hannah, she’s not going to give him peace. She’s going to ruin him again, and this time, she’ll take the kids with her when Elijah has already fallen in love with them and she’s going to see story him.”
