Vivienne’s hand went dead.
The tendons Felix had “fixed” tore apart–one snap, then an her, then her whole arm locked up
She screamed, clutching it.
“My hand–AIIIIII, it hurts!”
She collapsed into Cade’s arms. He grabbed her wrist, panicking
“What the hell? l’elix fixed this!”
“Did 1?”
At that moment, someone laughed from the back of the stage
Felix walked into the light, hands in his pockets.
Cade’s face went white. “What did you do?!”
Felix tilted his head, smiling.
“I let her tendons rot. That’s what happens when you fuck with my sister.”
Cade spun on me, eyes wide. “You-”
His mouth opened. Nothing came out.
“You could play just now. So that means-
“You two-” He looked between us. “This whole fucking time”
Yep. He was right. Felix wasn’t just some underground surgeon.
He was my parents‘ adopted son. The ace the Winters family kept hidden.
Ten years ago, when Evan died, Felix had been overseas. By the time he got back, Cade was already at my side.
Felix warned me. Over and over.
“He’s a wolf. You can’t tame a wolf. I’ll bite you the second you turn your back.”
But I defended Cade every time.

Even three years ago–when l’elix used my hand as a test–1ade excuses.
“That bracelet was all he had left of his mother. Those dockslmost got him killed. Of course he hesitated–anyone
would!”
Felix just looked at me. Didn’t argue. Didn’t push.
“Even with my help, your hand will only recover ninety pergent. You can play basics, sure. But Van Cliburn? That’s done.”
I stared at my ruined hand.
But I forced myself to smile.
“Evan died saving him. I have to believe he’s worth it.”
“I’m done with piano. This hand’s better for holding a gun.”
“I’ll protect the people I love. That’s enough.”
Felix didn’t smile back.
“You’re going to regret this.”
“But it’s okay. I’ll always have your back.”
Turned out he’d been right all along.
The man I gave up everything for had betrayed me completely.
If Cade hadn’t tried to save Vivienne, she’d only lose one hand. But he did. So Felix made sure the “cure” was a ticking time bomb.
Now, Vivienne’s arm was turning black–veins bulging, skin mottling like rotten meat.
“You think this is over?”
Cade’s voice was shaking with rage.
“I’m partnered with Lin Batman. Your biggest enemy. He’s on his way right now.”
“You lost North District. The Winters family is done.”
He pointed at the floor. “Get on your knees. Fix her hand. Be. Maybe I’ll let you survive this.”
Hearing that, I caught Felix’s eye.

He smirked.
I also had to bite my lip to keep from laughing.
Just in time, the doors exploded open.
Lin Batman walked in–thirty men behind him, all armed.
Cade’s face lit up. He turned to us, grinning.
“Game over, San.”
Then Lin walked straight past him.
And aimed his gun at Cade’s head.
