Chapter 4
Chapter 4
I tried to control my fingers.
There was a signal transmitter implanted on the inside of my arm.
One press and my people would quickly find me using GPS.
This was the ace up my sleeve.
The sound of the rope fraying got more and more obvious. Veins bulged on Griffin’s forehead.
“If my wife suffers any permanent damage, I’ll destroy every single one of your careers! Where the fuck is emergency response?”
Griffin shot to his feet. “Secure climbing gear to me immediately–I’m executing a direct rescue operation.”
Both the staff and Juniper instinctively tried to stop him. “Sir, that’s completely against safety regulations!”
But Griffin was already strapping on rope. “My wife represents everything I’ve built my life around–shared risk is acceptable.”
Seeing his determination, Juniper’s expression shifted slightly as she clutched her chest and let out a pained whimper.
“It hurts so, so bad, Mr. Caldwell. Please don’t leave me alone!”
Griffin froze and stayed put.
A staff member quickly examined her.
“Miss Wilde’s pre–existing condition is triggering severe complications from the extreme activity. Without immediate medical intervention, we’re looking at potential fatality.”

Juniper’s breathing became more labored and weak.
“I’m getting all dizzy and weird…”
Griffin had been charging forward recklessly, but his steps came to a complete stop.
‘Mr. Caldwell, mountain access for emergency vehicles requires significant transit time. We’re operating under critical time constraints!”
Griffin was breathing heavily. After a few beats of calculated hesitation, he finally reached up and untied the safety rope.
He stood at the cliff’s edge and looked at me once.
‘Seraphina, maintain your position. Professional rescue teams are en route with specialized equipment. I’ll coordinate your medical care from the hospital.”
His expression was conflicted. “You’re my primary priority, always. But I can’t authorize letting someone else die when intervention is possible. You understand strategic thinking–you’ll recognize this was the only viable option.”

Chapter 4
He didn’t seem to wait for my answer, like he’d made up his mind, turning and striding toward Juniper.
So he didn’t see my response.
“No… I won’t forgive you.”
Not in this fucking lifetime.
Juniper’s breathing was weak.
“This is probably the last dumb thing I’ll ever do. I have to tell the truth, Mr. Caldwell–please don’t be super mad, okay? My head was hurting so crazy bad that I totally forgot to call the rescue people. If I made something bad happen to your wife, maybe I should like, pay for it with my life or whatever?”
Veins popped on Griffin’s arms, but he still tried to rationalize.
“Both outcomes will be positive. She’s equipped with comprehensive protective systems–impact damage should be minimal even in
worst–case scenarios.”
But Griffin didn’t know that the protective gear had already been soaked when Juniper clumsily spilled water on me earlier, and
she’d taken it off and tossed it aside.
“Mr. Caldwell, I’m like, such a disaster person. But hey, at least after today you won’t have to deal with me being all weird and
clumsy anymore…”
Griffin’s voice cracked with uncharacteristic emotion. “Stop talking like that! No fatalistic statements!”
He quickened his pace.
Just as their voices faded completely, the bungee cord holding me finally reached its limit.
With a soft shap, accompanied by the staff’s terrified screams, I plummeted into the endless abyss, crashing hard into a thick forest.
Griffin, this is the second time you’ve abandoned me.
Right before I lost consciousness completely, I finally regained control of my body.
With trembling fingers, I pressed the emergency signal.
