Jamison's thoughts were clearly running along the same lines.
He shot his wife a mournful look, as if to say, *It's not my fault.*
Ivy wasn't blaming him, of course. It was just a sad, almost comical, situation.
Soon, Davina and Thad arrived to visit.
"Ivy, I brought breakfast," Davina said in her warm, sisterly way. "You eat first, and then see what Jamison can have and feed him a little."
Ivy nodded and saw the generous spread of food. She was starving, so after a quick thank you, she sat down to eat, anxious to finish so she could tend to Jamison.
Thad went to the bedside and looked down at his pale, weak brother. "How are you feeling? Hanging in there?"
Jamison shot him a cool glance. "If I wasn't, could you take my place?"
"I'd be willing to."
"Don't be ridiculous. The Ludwig family needs you. If someone had to get sick, it's better that it was me."
Davina walked over, exasperated. "Can you two stop talking such nonsense? You both need to be healthy and strong. And Jamison, don't let your mind wander. The doctors said the surgery was a complete success. You're going to get better."
Jamison offered a weak smile in response.
Though she had felt ravenous, Ivy lost her appetite after just a few bites. She decided to feed Jamison first.
Davina noticed. "Ivy, is that all you're going to eat?"
"I'm not very hungry," she replied, picking up a bowl of fish chowder and carrying it to the bed.
But when she offered him a spoonful, Jamison turned his head away. "I'm not eating unless you finish your meal first."
Over the past few days, Jamison had watched his wife grow thinner, and while he hadn't said anything, it pained him. Now that he was feeling a bit better, he couldn't stand to see her neglecting herself any longer.
