He worried that his parents would go behind his back, cutting deals and forcing someone into an impossible position.
Catching his hesitation, Ivy quickly promised, "We absolutely will not pressure or bribe anyone. If we find a match and they're willing, you can speak to them face-to-face. Hear them out before you make a final decision."
After a long stretch of silence, Jamison finally replied, "We'll see. It's not exactly easy to find a match."
He was right, and Ivy knew it. Even among blood relatives, the odds were incredibly slim.
The spark of hope that had flared in her chest quickly fizzled out after the morning's exhausting ordeal.
Neither of them spoke. Physically and emotionally drained, Ivy quietly laid her head on his chest.
Understanding her despair, Jamison didn't say a word. He simply raised his hand and began to stroke her hair, a gentle, soothing rhythm.
Later that day, Ivy received a comforting WhatsApp message from her best friend Katrina.
Katrina had heard the news, but unable to do much else, she sent over a photo of Naylor's testing paperwork.
[He was healthy enough for the preliminary screening. We're just waiting for the match results tomorrow.]
Ivy was overwhelmingly grateful.
Whether it was a match or not, the mere intention was enough to fill her with profound comfort and gratitude.
In her darkest hour, her friends and family were giving her endless courage and strength.
Waiting until Jamison fell asleep, she slipped out of the room and headed down to the organ transplant center to get tested herself.
Knowing her husband's endless reservations, Ivy prayed silently. *Please let a miracle happen. Let me be the match.*
If she was a match and could donate, every single one of his ethical concerns would vanish.
They were husband and wife, a single entity. Keeping score of who owed who was entirely irrelevant.
Besides, for years, he had been the one doting on her, protecting her, and supporting her. If she had a chance to repay that devotion, she would do it in a heartbeat.
Jamison's condition hadn't deteriorated to the point of being bedridden. Aside from his mandatory treatments, he still had plenty of time on his hands.
So whenever Ivy was away from the hospital, he usually wasn't in his room either. He'd wander back to his department to help out, or bury himself in medical journals and international case studies in his office, hoping against hope to find a better treatment protocol.
He only returned to his room when it was time for his meds or when he knew Ivy was on her way back.
Strolling down the corridor, he passed the oncology department's main office.
Considering he hadn't been back to the Ludwig estate in a week, he planned to check himself out for the afternoon to visit his elderly parents. He figured he should give Director Wylde a heads-up.
"Dr. Ludwig, please make sure you come back early!"
Jamison didn't even glance back as he hurried down the hall.
The boys had been staying at the Ludwig estate lately, and he knew Ivy would be there with them. He got into his car and sped straight toward the house.
The Ludwig estate.
Floyd and Denis were out on the lawn kicking a soccer ball around. Having just finished spending time with them, Ivy was debating if she should head back to the hospital. As she stood up, her phone buzzed.
Seeing Director Wylde's name on the screen, she answered immediately.
"Ivy, Jamison just left his room. I assume he's heading home. Give him a call and see where he is." Director Wylde had grown familiar with the family, his tone as casual as a friend's.
Ivy was stunned. "He left his room? When? He didn't tell me."
"About fifteen minutes ago." Having delivered the update, Director Wylde pivoted to the main issue. "The match results are in. From the first batch of candidates, a young man named Boyd is a match."
"Boyd... that's amazing!" Excitement surged through her, but it quickly faded as she remembered her husband's stubbornness. She quickly asked, "What about my results?"
"We won't have the results for you or Mr. Wilson until tomorrow."
