The War God Alpha's Arranged Bride (Evelyn and Alexander) novel Chapter 120

**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 120: Give Me The Key**

[Evelyn’s POV]

As I trailed closely behind Oliver, I fought to keep my anxiety from spiraling out of control. The mere thought of Edward being involved in whatever was happening sent my mind racing. If his health was stable and his treatments were going well, then what could possibly warrant such urgency from Alexander? The questions swirled in my head like a storm, each one more frantic than the last.

I knew I should focus on the present, yet my thoughts danced around the unknown.

Upon entering Alexander’s office, my unease intensified. The atmosphere was thick with tension, and even Alexander seemed unsure how to navigate this unexpected conversation. His usually confident demeanor was replaced by a hint of hesitation, which only fueled my apprehension.

With my heart pounding, I approached his desk, glancing between the two men, their expressions unreadable. I crossed my arms over my chest, trying to shield myself from the mounting anxiety.

“Alright, can someone please explain why I’m here?” I asked, my voice wavering slightly. “I won’t lie; I’m feeling pretty freaked out right now.”

“Evelyn.”

Alexander’s voice held an unusual caution that did nothing to ease my nerves. It felt like a warning, a prelude to something I wasn’t ready to hear.

“Okay, you need to tell me what is going on right now,” I insisted, my frustration bubbling to the surface.

His gaze softened, but it did little to calm the storm within me. “Do you remember the night I first inquired about your brother’s condition and how he ended up in this state?”

That night felt like a distant memory, yet vividly etched in my mind. It was the evening Wendy had orchestrated a formal dinner for Alexander and me, the air filled with laughter and the clinking of glasses. We had shared a beautiful meal, the ambiance almost magical, before moving to the adjoining ballroom where we danced—a moment I had never imagined experiencing with him just a week prior.

But beyond the enchanting evening, I recalled how he had asked about Edward’s accident and well-being. I hadn’t found it odd; in fact, I appreciated his interest in a part of my life that had been a tumultuous journey over the past several months. Each time my thoughts wandered to Edward, I found myself on an emotional rollercoaster.

I would think of his condition, the injustice of it all, how someone as kind-hearted as him could suffer so deeply. Then, memories of our childhood would flood my mind—moments when it had been just the two of us against the world, promising to always be there for one another, no matter what life threw our way.

But the weight of the future loomed heavily over me, a future that Edward might never fully experience if his health didn’t improve.

“Yes,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper, feeling the heaviness of the conversation settle around me.

“And do you also recall how I followed up with a few questions about the accident—specifically regarding the other vehicle involved?”

I nodded slowly, my heart sinking further. This conversation was leading me down a path I was not prepared for, and the tension in his voice was unsettling.

“Alexander, please just tell me what’s going on,” I urged, my voice rising in desperation.

“Perhaps you should take a seat,” he suggested, his tone steady yet filled with an undercurrent of concern.

My eyes narrowed defiantly. “No. I want you to tell me what you need to say before I decide I’d rather not be here at all. Just spit it out.”

He maintained eye contact, his expression serious. “The situation surrounding your brother’s accident has been troubling me for quite some time,” he confessed. “The more you shared, the more my curiosity grew, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.”

My brows shot up in disbelief. “Off? What do you mean? I told you everything I knew about that horrible night.”

“We didn’t want to believe it either,” Oliver added quietly. “But we felt you had the right to know the entire truth about what transpired.”

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. “I’ll admit, part of me always found it strange that my family never received much information about the accident. But I was so focused on helping Edward that I didn’t allow myself to dwell on it.”

Alexander shook his head gently, lifting my chin with his hand. “No one could expect you to manage all of that while caring for your brother.”

“We genuinely debated bringing this to your attention sooner,” Oliver chimed in. “It wasn’t our intention to keep you in the dark. With Edward on the mend, we thought your focus would be on the future.”

Their concern wrapped around me like a warm blanket, momentarily easing the chill of dread. They were right; I shouldn’t have been so consumed by this revelation. Yet, the truth loomed large, and I couldn’t ignore its implications.

For months, I had believed my brother’s misfortune was simply a cruel twist of fate. But now, it was clear that it was part of something far more sinister—a failed murder attempt that had ensnared Edward in its web.

All because Michael had ordered the brake lines to be cut…

A wave of pain surged through my chest once more, and I struggled to breathe, inhaling deeply to steady myself.

“Evelyn? Please, tell me you’re alright,” Alexander urged, his voice laced with concern.

I flared my nostrils, suppressing a surge of anger that threatened to boil over. It took a moment before I could tear my gaze away from the floor, my body vibrating with pent-up frustration.

Silently, I extended my hand toward him. “I want the key to the chamber.”
