The War God Alpha's Arranged Bride (Evelyn and Alexander) novel Chapter 7

Chapter 7

In an instant, I felt a cold, hard object press firmly against my back. I glanced over my shoulder, heart pounding, to see Alexander’s Beta holding a gun pointed directly at my spine. Every muscle in my body tensed, stiffening as if carved from stone. Slowly, I turned back to face him, trying to steady my breath.

“What’s going on?” I asked, my voice barely steady.

“Keep your eyes on me and answer carefully,” he warned, his tone low and dangerous. “Oliver’s steady with a gun, but there’s always a chance it could misfire.”

I locked my gaze onto Alexander’s intense blue eyes. I caught the faintest curve of a smile playing at the corner of his mouth, a smile that felt more like a challenge as he moved closer to me.

My heart hammered wildly in my chest, each beat echoing in my ears. His voice cut through the tension, firm and commanding.

“I’ll ask you again… what were you discussing with your father?”

A lump formed in my throat, making it difficult to speak. “My father wanted me to look after you, to keep you from getting upset. I told him to worry about my brother.”

It was a complete lie—though not the whole truth.

Alexander’s eyes narrowed, scrutinizing me as if trying to unravel the half-truth in my words. He leaned back in his chair, squared his broad shoulders, and crossed his arms over his chest, radiating authority.

“Why did you decide to marry me?” he demanded sharply. “Are your intentions genuine, or have you been influenced by someone else’s wishes?”

I shook my head quickly, raising my hands in a calming gesture to ease his growing frustration.

“I assure you, this was my own decision.”

He tilted his head slightly, continuing his intense interrogation. “Why would you willingly marry a man who might be disabled for the rest of his life?”

The gun pressed even closer against my back, and anxiety began to rise inside me like a tide. For the first time, I truly felt the weight of Alexander’s presence—immense and unyielding.

There was no doubt in my mind that if he discovered I was using this marriage solely to save my brother, he would be furious. My father’s warning echoed sharply in my thoughts.

I focused on his virtues, painting a picture of him as a noble and just leader. By the time I finished, I was nearly breathless.

Alexander’s expression remained unreadable as he studied me, searching for sincerity. After what felt like an eternity, his eyes softened, a flicker of amusement crossing his face.

“Oliver.”

At that single command, his Beta lowered the gun, and I finally felt the air return to my lungs.

“Nina, take her and her things. She needs to change into something more suitable,” Alexander ordered as he turned to leave.

I exhaled deeply, sinking against the nearest wall in relief.

“And then send her to my bedroom,” he added over his shoulder.

My heart thudded painfully against my ribs. It was clear—this was far from over.
