Chapter 6
Three days later, the Federal Institute for Deepwater Technology hosted a grand ceremony to celebrate the success of the
rescue mission.
The event took place in the main auditorium–the same building where I’d worked for over a decade.
Nathan, Aubrey, Richard, and Theresa were seated front and center on the spotlighted main stage, basking in the
applause and praise that came pouring in from every direction.
When I stepped through the auditorium doors, wearing a faded lab coat that had been washed so many times it barely
held color, the entire room fell silent.
Dozens of eyes turned to me at once, sharp as knives.
Disdain. Disgust. Pity. Thinly veiled glee.
I ignored it all and walked forward–step by step, toward the stage.
“She’s got some nerve showing her face here.”
“She should’ve been fired ages ago.”
“Look at her. Pathetic. She deserves every bit of this.”
Their words weren’t whispered. They wanted me to hear.
Aubrey saw me.
She was dressed in a crisp white gown, elegant and commanding, like some spotless heroine.
She descended from the stage, right into the center of the flashing cameras, and wrapped me in a large, carefully staged
embrace.
“You came.”
Her voice was soft, magnanimous, overflowing with sisterly grace.
“I know you must’ve had your reasons for everything you did.”
‘I don’t blame you. No matter what… we’ll always be sisters.”
Flawless performance.
The audience erupted in praise.
“God, Aubrey is incredible. Look how kind she is–even after everything her sister did!”

“True strength. A heart of gold.”
“Compared to her, Rowan looks like a joke.”
Aubrey soaked in every second, the corner of her mouth twitching ever so slightly with satisfaction.
Then Richard stood up.
Behind him followed a team of Carter Dynamics attorneys in matching navy suits.
He walked over and looked down at me with contempt etched into every line of his face.
Right there in front of the press, the board, the staff–everyone–he threw a thick document straight into my face.
“Rowan Carter,” he declared, voice booming with authority, “as of today, all assets held under your name are revoked. You
are to leave the Carter Group with nothing.”
“1. Richard Carter, disown you. From this day forward, you are no longer my daughter.”
His words echoed across the auditorium like a gavel falling.
For a moment, the room held its breath.
Then came the applause–thunderous and cruel.
“Finally!”
Took him long enough!”
“Justice served!”
“Serves her right!”
The way they looked at me… like I was garbage finally taken out.
I didn’t even glance at the document. Didn’t bother looking at my father’s cold, triumphant face.
My gaze passed over him, to the man still standing on the stage in his pristine white suit–Nathan
My husband
He returned my stare with an expression as Indifferent as ever, holding a single sheet of paper in his hand.
He walked down the steps, stopped in front of me, and extended it toward me
A divorce agreement.
“Rowan,” he said, his voice as lifeless as his eyes, “we’re done.”

“I’ll leave the house to you. Consider it my final gesture of kindness.”
I looked at him–the man I’d loved for ten years, supported for ten years, the man I’d once handed every ounce of my
work to, without hesitation.
Then I stepped past him.
Walked up to the podium.
And picked up a document from the table–one that had just been paraded around as part of their big victory showcase.
The Neptune–X operations log.
I turned to face the cameras, the audience… and Nathan.
Lifting the report, I spoke clearly–slowly.
The Neptune–X’s remote rescue system was physically disabled by me prior to launch, with top–level encryption. It was
never activated.”
“So tell me. Commander Hale…”
“How exactly did you manage to control a completely isolated submarine–cut off from all external signals?”
