“I can’t. I have homework,” Julia was the first to refuse, already turning on her heel to leave the room.
“Won’t Grandma have private nurses? I’ve got things to deal with too. I need to be at the office tomorrow.”
Jettson shook his head, dismissing the idea.
“Dad, I’m transferring schools tomorrow,” Harlan chimed in. “I should rest early.”
With that, he turned and went upstairs without hesitation.
Morris stared in disbelief at the three children he’d raised.
Their grandmother was sick, and not one of them cared.
At last, his eyes landed on Priscilla.
She smoothed her impeccably styled hair in a gesture of cool detachment.
‘I have a shopping trip planned with the ladies tomorrow. I don’t have time for the hospital.
‘I’m not a doctor.
“Me being there is pointless.
“If you’re so concerned about Madam Turner’s condition, hire more private nurses.”
In that moment, Morris saw their true faces with brutal clarity.
If he were the one lying in that hospital bed, useless to them, he’d be discarded just as callously.
A profound disappointment hollowed him out as he looked at Priscilla. He said nothing more, simply turned and walked away in heavy silence.
Regret washed over him all over again.
If Larissa were still here, she would have stood by him without hesitation. She would have defended him,
