CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY_EVA’S POV
The call came just as I stepped out of my dressing room.
“Miss Sterling-congratulations. The role is yours.”
I didn’t smile immediately.
I let the words settle first-let them sink in. Only then did my lips curve into a slow, satisfied smile.
“Of course it is,” I said smoothly.
The call ended shortly after, but the feeling lingered long after. The feeling of triumph. Victory.
What can I say? I had expected it. I had worked hard for it.
By the time I got into the car, I had already moved on mentally, shifting pieces into place. One success led into the next. One step forward, and the rest followed.
Getting this role was one step in my plan. Leaving the country was next. Faking a baby bump for months, just to come home with an infant was the final, and most crucial plan.
Thankfully, everything was still moving exactly as it should.
The incident at the mansion had been… unfortunate.
The unfortunate part was that Lucian decided to play hero.
The hospital situation a result of incompetence- the woman had one job. She failed.
But neither of these had changed the outcome. Not really.
Claire was alive, yes. Protected now, even surrounded, watched more closely than before. It had made things messier, and drawn attention I hadn’t needed.
So I adjusted.
I stopped.
Not because I couldn’t continue, but because getting rid of her no longer served me.
There was no point in pushing when the board had already shifted. Not when Lucian was alert, when Margot had started circling like an all-knowing vulture, when every move would be watched and questioned.
No.
This phase required patience.
And I had always known when to wait.
I leaned back against the seat, my gaze drifting to the window as the city passed in a blur.

Then I looked at my reflection in the rearview mirror. Gorgeous.
Claire was no longer useful. Not like before. Not as leverage, or even as a threat.
If anything, she had become… inconvenient.
But temporary inconveniences didn’t matter. Not when the outcome was already certain.
I placed my hand lightly over my abdomen, feeling a small smirk form on my face.
None of this would matter when I returned. Not the tension, not the suspicion, not even Claire.
Because when I came back-
I would have something no one could ignore. Something final. Something that would undoubtedly settle
everything.
A baby.
Lucian might have chosen me, but didn’t choose me the way I wanted. The way that mattered.
That much had become impossible to ignore.
The image flashed in my mind before I could stop it.
Lucian-carrying Claire. Without hesitation. Without a second thought. Like nothing else mattered in the
world.
My jaw tightened slightly as I thought about it.
That wasn’t something I had. Not really.
When it came to me, Lucian simply didn’t have the instinct. The reflex. The kind of love that didn’t
calculate.
For a moment-just a moment- I felt something cold and painful settling in my chest. Something almost … hollow.
I exhaled slowly, forcing it away before it could fully form.
It didn’t matter. Feelings didn’t matter-only outcomes did.
And I still had that within my grasp. I always did.
My phone buzzed in my hand then.
Theo.
I stared at the screen for a second before answering, irritation already creeping in.
“You’ve been avoiding my calls,” I said without bothering with greetings.

My pleasantries were only reserved for the elite, not lowly, replaceable assistants.
Silence.
Then, “I’ve been busy.”
My lips curved into a sneer, unimpressed.
“Busy?” I repeated. “Doing what, exactly?”
Another pause.
I rolled my eyes slightly, leaning back.
“You’re being dramatic, Theo. It’s not my fault you got fired- if only you had been more careful.” I scolded. “And just so you know, your attitude right now is highly unnecessary.”
“I’m not-”
“It doesn’t matter,” I cut in smoothly. “You’re not essential to this anymore.”
That was the truth. Theo had served his purpose- I didn’t need him anymore.
And besides, I had already replaced him.
“You should stop sulking,” I added lightly. “It doesn’t suit you.”
His silence stretched longer this time, into something uncomfortable. Something unusual.
But I didn’t dwell on it. There was nothing there worth analyzing.
“You’ll hear from me when I need something,” I said, already disengaging.
Then I ended the call.
By the time I arrived at the mansion, I had already forgotten that I had such an irritating conversation.
It wasn’t important.
Nothing was, except what came next.
Staff moved carefully in the mansion, their movements just a fraction too controlled, too aware.
The tension still lingered here.
Good.
It meant people were still paying attention. As a celebrity, I needed that more than anything else.
“Miss Sterling-”
I turned slightly.

Camilla approached, visibly uneasy. Not that I cared. The old housekeeper was a thorn in my flesh- and I didn’t like the way she looked at me.
After she had testified in court for Claire, Lucian should have fired her- I had begged him to.
But Lucian was a stubborn man. He insisted on keeping her.
But that didn’t mean I was obligated to treat her nicely.
“What?” I snapped the moment she called my name.
“There are visitors at the gate.”
I arched a brow. “Visitors?”
We weren’t expecting anyone.
“Yes, ma’am. They said it’s… official.” She paused, then- “They’re from the police.”
I didn’t react immediately. Instead, I let the words settle.
Then I nodded once. “Let them in.” I instructed. “And put a call across to Lucian.”
My tone didn’t change or falter.
Because there was nothing to falter over.
By the time I stepped outside, I was already composed again, every inch of me elegant and captivating. I ensured that my expressions were carefully neutral.
The cars were unmistakable, and so were the officers.
But that wasn’t what held my attention.
What truly held my attention was the woman standing just behind them.
Margot Sinclair.
