CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-ONE EVA’S POV
“Because we’re about to test it.”
Margot’s words lingered in the air long after she finished speaking.
I didn’t move.
Didn’t react.
I simply watched the officers in the mansion. The shift was subtle, but unmistakable. Staff who had once moved with quiet efficiency now scattered. Their movements were now sharper, more uncertain.
The house felt different. Tighter. Smaller.
They were moving faster than expected.
I turned slightly, my gaze sweeping across the entrance, taking in every detail- every face, every
movement.
“Make sure no one interferes with them,” I said calmly to Camilla, who looked like she had seen better
days.
“And have someone present at all times. I want to know exactly what they’re doing.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
I stepped forward, re-entering the house as if nothing had shifted at all. As if I still held control over every
inch of it.
Because I did. Or I should have.
The officers moved with purpose, ignoring the quiet authority I carried through the space. They didn’t stop when I approached. Didn’t acknowledge me beyond the bare minimum.
Admittedly, that grated on my nerves.
My gaze shifted back to Margot.
She hadn’t followed immediately. She stood near the entrance, composed as ever, observing everything with that same steady, calculated focus.
The woman thought she was impeccably intelligent.
Well if she was as brilliant as she thought she was, how come she hadn’t been able to get justice for her dearest little sister?
The thought amused me.
Ruining Elise had been easy, and enjoyable besides. She had a lot of nerve, thinking she could compete
with me.

I started walking toward Margot.
“Still holding on to old grudges?” I asked lightly as I stopped in front of her. “Or is this about something else?”
Her eyes met mine.
“Your sister,” I continued, tilting my head slightly. “Elise Sinclair, wasn’t it?”
A faint pause.
“I would have thought you’d moved on by now,” I added. “Or are you still sore about what happened to
her career?”
Margot gave me nothing.
Not even a flicker of a reaction. No anger, no emotion.
Just that same calm, controlled silence.
It irritated me more than it should have.
“Personal attacks won’t help you,” she finally said. Her tone was flat and dismissive.
It annoyed me, but I played it off with a smile. “That wasn’t an attack.”
“It sounded like one.”
“Then you’re hearing what you want to hear.”
Another pause.
She didn’t engage further. Didn’t rise to it.
And that-
That was the problem.
I held her gaze for a second longer, then looked away first.
Not because I had to, but because there was nothing to gain from continuing the stare-down.
But the irritation lingered, subtle but very uncomfortable.
God, how I hated Margot Sinclair! Perhaps I should have ordered a hit on her much earlier
I stepped back, my attention shifting elsewhere, but my mind didn’t follow.
My mind stayed on Margot.
On what she knew.
On what she thought she knew.

But what exactly did she know? What facts did she have?
How much?
From where?
The questions came quietly, but persistently.
Did something slip?
The thought settled deeper than I liked, but I was able to push it aside.
I needed to focus. I needed to recalculate.
That’s when my mind went to a whole other direction-
Theo.
That little snake!
My jaw tightened slightly at the thought.
His silence. His tone earlier- the hesitation, the reluctance
“He wouldn’t dare,” I muttered under my breath.
He knew better.
He understood what was at stake.
What I was capable of.
And yet the doubt was there now. Small, but very much present.
I turned away from the main hall and moved toward the quieter wing of the house, pulling my phone from my bag as I walked.
I needed confirmation.
So I dialed the number without hesitation.
He answered on the second ring.
“Everything was handled,” he said immediately, like he had been expecting the call.
I didn’t respond right away.
“You told me everything was handled,” I said slowly, then paused. “So why are people asking questions?”
“They don’t have anything,” he replied quickly. “I made sure of it. There’s nothing that leads back to me.”
“To you,” I repeated.

Another pause.
“I wasn’t seen,” he added, sounding a little bit pissed off. “The cameras were down exactly when they needed to be. No one followed me, which means no one knows.”
I let the silence stretch just long enough, processing everything he had said.
I knew him to be thorough.
“Good,” I said, exhaling quietly.
At least that part hadn’t unraveled. That was something.
I ended the call without saying another word. Things hadn’t spun too far beyond my control.
For a moment, I just stood there; still and thinking. Strategizing. Calculating.
Then I dialed again. This time, the call took longer to connect.
“Hello?”
His voice was lower than usual. More careful.
“Tell me you haven’t done anything stupid,” I started.
Dr. Ramon inhaled sharply on the other end of the line. “I haven’t.”
“But you’ve been contacted.” It wasn’t a question.
Silence followed.
That was answer enough.
“By who?” I asked, even though I already knew.
“A representative,” he answered finally. “From Sinclair & Co.”
Of course.
“I don’t appreciate being kept in the dark about these things, even for a second!” I scolded, careful not to raise my voice too high. “Did you speak to them?” I continued.
“No.” He answered. “I refused.”
“Good.”
But that wasn’t enough. It would never be enough. No amount of reassurance could put my mind to ease. Underestimating Margot Sinclair would be foolish.
And something told me she’s almost as protective of Claire as she was of her sister, Elise.
“She’s not going to stop,” I added quietly, hoping he understood how serious of a situation we were in.

I didn’t need to say her name. He knew.
“I’m aware,” he replied with the same serious tone.
My grip tightened slightly around the phone. “Margot Sinclair might be a giant pain in the ass, but she’s nothing if not persistent.”
