CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY THREE LUCIAN’S POV
“Let’s start again.”
I didn’t raise my voice.
The doctor stepped forward when I gestured to him, composed as any good medical professional. He greeted me first, then glanced at Eva, waiting for direction that wasn’t hers to give.
“Doctor,” I said, my tone even, “you’ll be conducting a routine evaluation.”
Eva let out a quiet breath that almost sounded like a laugh.
“This is unnecessary,” she disagreed. “I already have a doctor.”
I didn’t look at her when I spoke.
“I’m aware.”
“I’m not comfortable being examined by someone else.” She stated.
“You’re not being examined- not yet,” I replied calmly. “You’re simply being asked questions.”
I watched her jaw tighten. For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she leaned back slightly, folded her hands together in front of her, like she was trying to regain
control.
“Fine,” she said, then turned her attention to the doctor. “Ask.”
The doctor nodded once and began.
“When was your last menstrual cycle?”
Eva answered.
“Scan history?”
She hesitated-just briefly-then answered again.
“Have you had any hormone level testing done recently?”
“Yes.” She answered quickly.
“When?”
“A few weeks ago.”
“What were the results?”
“They were normal.” She sneered, seemingly annoyed by the questioning.
The doctor continued, regardless.

“Any persistent symptoms? Nausea, fatigue, dizziness?” He asked.
“Yes.” Eva said through gritted teeth. “All of that.”
“Medication?”
“Nothing significant.”
“Any complications so far?”
“No.”
The answers came, but they didn’t sit right.
Not with him.
Not with me.
But I didn’t interrupt. I didn’t need to. I decided I would let the doctor do his job.
He slowed slightly, his tone shifting almost imperceptibly.
“That’s… unusual,” he said, more to himself than to her.
Eva stiffened.
“It’s not,” she replied quickly-too quickly. “Every pregnancy is different.”
“Of course,” he said. “But typically, by this stage, there would be clearer documentation of progression.”
“I told you I’ve been seeing my doctor.” she said, her voice tightening, the color rising in her face.
She was losing control. Good.
People like her made mistakes when they were pressed.
“Yes,” the doctor replied, professional and unfazed. “Which is why I’d expect-”
“This is inappropriate,” Eva cut in, sharper now. “I don’t see why I have to justify my condition like this.”
“Continue,” I said to the doctor, ignoring Eva’s protests.
The room went still again.
Eva looked at me then- really looked.
There was something in her expression now that hadn’t been there before.
Not control, not confidence, but something thinner. Something strained.
The doctor continued. “Do you have any documentation?”
Eva exhaled, shifting in her seat.

“I can bring the ultrasound picture I showed him,” she said, gesturing toward me.
“That won’t be necessary,” I replied immediately.
The doctor inclined his head slightly. “Any other documentation would suffice. Reports, lab results, prescriptions-anything from your attending physician.”
Eva opened her mouth, then stopped.
The pause stretched too long.
That was the moment I saw it.
Not just the hesitation, but the absence.
There was nothing there for her to reach for. Nothing real.
“You’ve been seen regularly,” I stated.
Ev nodded quickly. “Yes, I have.”
“Then there should be records.” I continued.
Silence.
“Results.”
Silence.
“Proof.”
Eva’s lips parted slightly, then again.
“I’m not the type to keep paperwork,” she said with a casual shrug of her shoulders. “That’s what doctors
are for.”
I held her gaze then, unmoved. Unconvinced by her nonsense.
“You’re doing this because of her,” she said, suddenly diverting. Her voice was tight with emotion. If I didn’t know better, I would have pitied her. “Because of Claire.”
“No.” I replied simply. Firmly. I wouldn’t let her make this into something else.
“This has absolutely nothing to do with Claire.” I stayed. I’m doing this because you lied.”
Something in her expression broke then- not completely, but enough.
I turned to the doctor. “Arrange a scan at once.” I said.
Eva pushed back her chair and stood. The sound cut through the room. “No.”
Her voice was sharper now. More defensive.

“You’re not doing that here.”
“It’s a standard procedure.” I countered.
“It’s not happening,” she said, her breathing uneven now. “You can’t force me to undergo a medical examination. That’s a crime.”
Of course.
There were certain boundaries I wouldn’t cross. Eva knew that.
I nodded once. “You’re right.”
The agreement caught her off guard.
For a second, she didn’t know what to do with it.
I watched her eyes dart around the room, but it didn’t matter anymore.
Because the point had already been made.
The refusal, the hesitation, the lack of anything real behind her words.
It all pointed to one thing:
Eva wasn’t pregnant. She never had been.
