The Wife he threw Away (Claire and Lucian) novel Chapter 122

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-TWO_ LUCIAN’S POV

By the time I returned to the mansion, the air had changed again.

Not in a way anyone unfamiliar with the house would notice, but the change was there.

The police were still present, and from the look of things, they were already wrapping up. Some of them stood near the entrance, while others moved through the halls with purpose.

The staff kept their distance, speaking in lower tones, stepping carefully as if the wrong movement might draw attention.

It was almost orderly.

Almost.

“Mr. Dhark,” one of the officers approached as I stepped inside. “We’re continuing the investigation into

the incident at the event.”

“I’m aware,” I stated.

He nodded, professional. “We’ll try to keep disruption minimal.” He said, in an attempt to reassure me.

“That won’t be necessary,” I replied. “Do what you need to.”

I didn’t wait for a response. My gaze moved past him immediately, and landed on the blonde woman standing further in.

Margot Sinclair.

She was speaking to someone I assumed was from her firm. She turned slightly when I entered, her eyes finding mine without hesitation.

No greeting, no acknowledgment beyond that.

Honestly, none was needed.

She had done what she said she would.

Margot Sinclair was pushing from one side. I would handle the other.

For now, that was enough.

I moved past them, deeper into the house.

I heard Eva before I saw her.

Her voice carried faintly from the corridor ahead-low, controlled, threaded with something sharper beneath the surface.

“She won’t let this go,” Eva spoke into her phone. “You understand that, don’t you?”

I nodded once.

She hesitated then, just briefly. “I’ll miss you.”

Even her sentiments now seemed false.

I didn’t respond to that.

“When are you leaving?” I asked instead.

“Soon,” she replied, already grabbing a fork. “A few days, maybe.” She shrugged.

“A few days,” I repeated. “That’s quick.”

Eva’s lips curved into a pitiful smile. “I would love to stay with you a little longer,” she said, feigning sadness. “But the producers need me there, as the lead actress. They’re already on my neck-you know how these things work.”

I studied her for a moment- all made up face and fake emotions.

What was I thinking, falling for her?

“Have you seen your doctor recently?”

I watched her fingers pause slightly against the table.

“Yes,” she answered with a quick smile. “Everything is fine.”

“Cleared for travel?”

“Of course.” Eva replied smoothly.

God, she was believable.

I leaned back slightly, watching her. Ready to catch any reaction my next question could trigger.

“How far along are you now?”

“About…” she started, then stopped. Gotcha. “Almost four months.”

Almost.

I had been a fool. Four months and she still wasn’t showing. But then I knew of women didn’t start showing until they were well into their second trimester.

“What symptoms have you been having?” I continued.

Eva blinked once, before answering.

“Normal ones,” she said. “Fatigue. Some nausea.”

“Any complications?”

“No.”

“Medication?”

Another pause.

“Nothing serious.”

“When’s your next check-up?”

“Soon.” Her tone was snappy and tainted with irritation.

“How soon?” I pressed further

Eva frowned slightly. “Why are you asking so many questions?”

I didn’t answer. I simply watched her.

She shifted in her seat then let out a breath of frustration. “It’s all under control,” she stated. “You don’t

need to worry.”

“I’m not worried.”

That wasn’t the truth. But it wasn’t a lie either.

She exhaled lightly, trying to steady herself. “You’re overthinking this.”

“Am I?”

Her gaze held mine- blue orbs against green.

“Yes.” She answered.

I let the silence stretch.

Long enough for it to settle. Long enough for her to feel uncomfortable.

Then I broke the silence. “You should have chosen a better lie.”

The words didn’t need force. They had immediate effect.

Eva went completely still.

“What?” she said, too quickly. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

I didn’t respond. Didn’t argue or explain.

I watched her composure falter, just for a second.

Then she recovered.

“You’re being unreasonable,” she continued, her voice rising. “After everything that’s happened-”

I turned my head slightly, ignoring her protests.

“Bring him in.” I instructed my assistant, my voice calm but direct.

Eva stiffened.

Then-

She relaxed.

Not completely, but noticeably.

Because she understood what I had said.

Or thought she did.

“Lucian,” she said carefully, “this isn’t necessary.”

“It is.” I countered,

Her lips pressed together briefly, but that was the only sign of protest she showed. She didn’t push

further.

Because she believed she didn’t need to.

Because she believed she was still in control.
