The Wife he threw Away (Claire and Lucian) novel Chapter 294

Lucian got out of bed.

I watched him walk toward the window.

For a few seconds, he said nothing.

His back was rigid, his hands were planted against the window frame.

“Lucian.” I called after a moment.

He turned around.

“They know.”

The words sent a chill through me.

“I know.”

“They know about the baby.”

I nodded. “That’s what scares me.”

He walked back toward me.

“Why didn’t you tell me yesterday?”

“I didn’t want to ruin our night.” I stated.

“You should have told me.”

I rolled my eyes trying my best not to get annoyed. “I know.”

He sat beside me.

His anger softened when he saw my face. “I’m not angry at you.”

“I know.”

“I just…” He paused, then let out a frustrated breath. “I don’t like the idea of someone following you.”

“Neither do I.” Obviously.

“And taking photographs of you.”

“I know.”

He looked at my flat stomach, then back at me.

“Especially now.”

I reached for his hand. “I was as careful as possible.”

“How?”

“My car.”

His eyes immediately sharpened. “What about your car?”

“I didn’t drive it home.”

I explained what had happened in the parking lot. How I had felt uneasy. How I’d remembered what happened to Margot. And how I saw Laurel leaving and asked her to drive me home.”

Lucian listened without interrupting.

When I finished, his expression was grim.

“You did the right thing.”

“I wasn’t sure if I was being paranoid.”

“You weren’t.”

He squeezed my hand.

“Your car stays at Sinclair & Co. until we know it’s safe.”

“I wasn’t planning to drive it.”

“Good.”

He reached for his phone.

“I’ll have someone inspect it.”

I nodded.

“And I’ll arrange additional security for you.”

I frowned.

“Lucian—”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I’m not going to tell you where you can and can’t go.”

His voice softened.

“But I’m asking you to let me protect you.”

I sighed.

“I don’t want to live in fear.”

“You won’t.”

He touched my cheek.

“But I refuse to pretend there isn’t a threat when we’ve already seen what Eva is capable of.”

His words settled heavily between us.

Hart’s warning came back to me.

She’ll do something desperate.

I looked away.

“What if she really knows?”

“She probably does.”

“And what if she tries to hurt the baby?”

Lucian’s expression changed instantly. “She wouldn’t dare.”

“You don’t know that.”

When it was finally time to leave, Lucian walked me to the entrance himself.

“You’ll call me when you get there?”

“Yes.”

His eyes were glimmering with excitement. “And when you leave?”

“Yes.”

“And if anything feels strange—”

“I’ll call you.” I stated before he could even finish.

He smiled. “Good.”

I reached up and kissed him. “Try not to worry.”

“I make no promises.”

Laughter scraped out of my throat.

He kissed my forehead, then gently placed his hand over my stomach.

“Take care of my girls.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Girls?”

He smiled. “I’m allowed to be greedy.”

“And if it’s a boy?”

“I’ll love him too.”

“Good answer.”

He laughed.

I took a step away from him. For a moment, I looked at the man standing in front of me.

Yesterday, I had walked into this house carrying a secret.

Today, I was leaving with the something else hanging over us.

But I was also leaving with something I had never had a lot of before—

Hope for the future.

Lucian remained behind me as I opened the door.

“Claire.”

I turned.

“I love you.”

A smile easily spread across my face. “I love you too.”

Then I stepped outside and headed to work.

My car was still sitting at Sinclair & Co.

And until we knew who had been watching me, I wouldn’t be going anywhere near it.
