The Wife he threw Away (Claire and Lucian) novel Chapter 295

By the time I arrived at Sinclair & Co., the building was already buzzing with activity.

We were going back to court in two days.

After the two week break from the case, everyone was working twice as hard to make sure we were ready for court.

Files were being reviewed, witness statements were being organized and all the lawyers involved were going over every piece of evidence we had gathered against Eva.

Hart Sullivan had become unexpectedly useful.

Since agreeing to cooperate, he had been working closely with our legal team. His information had helped us fill in gaps we hadn’t known existed.

Dates, names, messages and even places.

Everything he knew about Eva’s schemes was slowly becoming another piece of the case.

For the first time, I felt like we weren’t simply reacting to Eva anymore. We were building something concrete that could finally bring her down.

I walked toward Margot’s office.

Before I could knock, her voice came from inside. “Come in!”

She must have heard my footsteps.

Margot looked up from her desk when I opened the door.

Her eyes immediately narrowed. “You look different.”

I smiled. “Different how?”

“Happy.” She remarked.

I closed the door behind me as quietly as I could.

“Maybe I’m just having a good day.” I shrugged.

Margot leaned back in her chair. “No,” she pointed at me. “That is the face of someone hiding something—possibly some really good news.”

I laughed. “You know me too well, attorney.”

“I’ve been doing this longer than you’ve been alive.”

“That sounds insulting.”

“It wasn’t meant to be.”

I smiled as I walked toward her desk.

For a moment, I didn’t know how to say it.

Even though I had already told Lucian. Even though I had spent the entire night smiling about it…

Saying it aloud to Margot felt different.

I took a deep breath.

“I’m pregnant.”

Margot froze.

Her eyes widened.

“What?”

I laughed nervously.

“I’m pregnant.”

“Oh my God.”

She pushed herself forward in her chair.

“Claire!”

She reached for my hands.

“Congratulations!”

Her smile was enormous.

“You’re serious?”

I nodded.

“Six weeks.”

Margot’s eyes immediately filled with tears.

She stood and pulled me into a careful hug.

“Oh, sweetheart.”

I laughed against her shoulder.

“You’re going to make me cry again.”

“Let me cry.”

She pulled back and held my face.

“After everything you’ve been through…”

She shook her head.

“This is wonderful.”

“It is.”

I couldn’t stop smiling.

Margot hugged me again.

Then she suddenly pulled away.

“Wait.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Does Lucian know?”

I laughed.

“Yes.”

“And?”

“He cried.”

Margot’s mouth fell open.

“It helps more than you realize.”

Margot leaned back.

“Hart was Eva’s muscle. He was the person she used when she wanted someone frightened, hurt, threatened or removed.”

Her expression hardened.

“Now he’s sitting with our lawyers and handing us everything he knows.”

I exhaled. “What about Eva herself?”

Margot shrugged. “Eva has money, influence and connections.” She paused. “But she doesn’t have Hart anymore.”

She looked directly at me. “Without someone like him, Eva doesn’t have the physical muscle to do what she’s been doing.”

I knew she was right—at least, I hoped she was.

Margot smiled faintly. “And soon, she won’t have freedom either.”

I smiled. “I honestly can’t wait.”

“Neither can I.” Margot agreed with a sigh. “I just want her behind bars.”

She looked down at the files on her desk.

“I want this case finished. I want to wake up one morning and not have to wonder what Eva is planning.”

“So do I.”

“I want all of this behind us.”

I looked down at my stomach. “So do I.”

Margot’s smile returned. “And then you can focus on becoming a mother.”

I laughed softly. “I’m already terrified.”

Margot waved a hand. “You’ll be fine.”

“How do you know?”

“Because you’re Claire.” She squeezed my hand. “And that baby is going to be very loved.”

I smiled.

For the first time since receiving that envelope, I felt a little lighter.

Maybe Margot was right. Maybe I didn’t have to live every moment expecting something terrible to happen soon.

Maybe I should actually allow myself to enjoy this.

I had a baby on the way.

I had Lucian.

I had my career.

I finally had people who loved me.

And soon, hopefully, Eva would be nothing more than a chapter in our past.

I wanted to believe that—more than anything.
