By the time we returned to the Dhark mansion that evening, Camilla already knew.
Lucian had sent her a text along with picture attachments of the house.
He claimed he hadn’t told her earlier because he feared she might be too excited to keep the secret from me.
He wasn’t wrong.
We had barely stepped through the front door before Camilla appeared from the hallway with a look that told me she had been waiting for us.
“So,” she began.
I smiled. “So?”
“You bought a house.”
Lucian shrugged. “I wish I could have told you earlier.”
Camilla crossed her arms. “Me too, Mr. Dhark. I can’t believe you don’t trust me!”
Lucian and I broke into fits of laughter.
“Camilla.”
“And now I’m apparently in charge of choosing which staff members are going with you and which ones are staying here.”
“Sounds like fun,” I said. “I’ll help.”
She pointed at Lucian. “It’s okay, Lucian already gave a list.”
“That sounds like…” I looked at Lucian. “A lot.”
Lucian looked offended. “I gave a reasonable list.”
“A ridiculous list.”
“I trust you.”
“Yeah, and that’s why the mansion’s staffing problem was dumped on me.” Camilla complained. “Anyone who gets left behind here will have a grudge against me—forever.”
Lucian smiled. “Tell them it was my decision.” He suggested. “Besides, you’re the only person I trust to handle this properly.”
Camilla’s expression softened, even though she tried to hide it—and failed.
“You’ve always known how to flatter an old woman.”
“It’s worked for years.” Lucian said, and immediately started making his way upstairs.
She rolled her eyes.
Lucian looked at me.
“Coming?”
“In a minute.”
He hesitated.
“Go,” I mouthed.
He finally left.
Camilla watched him disappear up the stairs before turning toward me.
“He’s so different now.”
I looked at her. “How?”
She smiled. “I’ve known that man since he was a boy.”
She shook her head. “I’ve seen him angry. I’ve seen him grieving. I’ve seen him become a businessman. I’ve seen him become a husband.”
She reached for my hand and held it like it was the most precious thing in the world. “But I’ve never seen him like this.”
I smiled. “Like what?”
“Hopeful.”
The word settled inside me.
Hopeful.
I looked toward the staircase. “He really wants this.”
“He does,” Camilla agreed as she led me away. “And he wants you.”
My chest tightened. “I know.”
She squeezed my fingers. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen him this excited about a future.”
I smiled. “He’s already planning our children’s lives.”
Camilla laughed heartily. “Typical Lucian Dhark.”
“He wants more than one.”

Eva is psycho!...
