Danielle returned home with a heavy weight on her chest that made even breathing difficult. She leaned against the wall in the entryway, taking a moment to steady herself. A dull ache in her lower abdomen, more pronounced than during the day, sent waves of pain through her nerves, causing a fine sheen of cold sweat to form on her forehead.
Too exhausted to even change her shoes, she dragged her weary body to the sofa and collapsed onto it. She took out her phone, intending to call Gian, but found the screen a blurry mess. Her eyelids felt as heavy as lead.
Just a little rest… just for a moment…
Danielle thought to herself as she leaned back against the sofa and slowly closed her eyes.
The sky outside had long since turned dark, and the living room was unlit. Her consciousness grew hazy, the tightness in her chest and the pain in her abdomen gradually giving way to a deep drowsiness, and before she knew it, she had fallen into a deep sleep.
When she next awoke, it was to the sound of a key turning in the lock, followed by Niki’s cheerful voice. “Mommy, I’m home from school!”
Danielle’s eyes flew open, but her vision was dark, and her head felt heavy and muddled, as if filled with lead. She tried to sit up but was completely drained of strength. The slightest movement sent the room spinning.
“Mommy! Why are you sleeping out here?” Niki skipped over and touched Danielle’s hand, then gasped. “Mommy, your hand is so hot! Do you have a fever?”
Niki reached out and touched Danielle’s forehead. The searing heat sent her into an instant panic, and her eyes turned red. “Mommy, we have to go to the hospital! I’ll help you up!”
She used all her might to try and lift Danielle, but her small frame was no match for an adult’s weight. Danielle barely managed to rise before collapsing weakly back onto the sofa.
“Niki… don’t panic…” Danielle’s voice was hoarse, her gaze unfocused. “Call your uncle Gain… ask him to take Mommy to the hospital…”
