Danielle took a deep breath, trying to calm the chaos in her mind. She stared into Alexander’s eyes, her voice laced with exhaustion. “If you know something, just tell me. Stop beating around the bush and speaking in riddles. I don’t have the energy to guess what you’re thinking, and I don’t want to waste any more time.”
For years, she had never been able to truly see through Alexander. One moment he was cold and distant, the next he would appear with surprising concern. Now his cryptic words were piling on, making the cloud of suspicion in her mind even heavier.
Seeing the weariness and defensiveness in her eyes, Alexander’s throat moved, and his tone softened slightly. “If you’re willing to trust me, then I’ll tell you.”
His words were like a stone, blocking any further argument from her. She frowned, feeling both angry and helpless. He was the one who started this, yet he was making her trust a precondition. But then she thought about it again. If she didn’t get to the bottom of this, the shadow of being followed and the vague, looming danger would continue to haunt her and Niki.
“Fine,” Danielle said. “Then talk.”
Alexander glanced at his watch. It was late. The motion-activated lights in the hallway flickered on and off. He made a quiet suggestion. “This isn’t the place to talk. Can we go upstairs? Some things will take time to explain.”
Danielle’s heart skipped a beat. She hesitated for a few seconds. Letting him upstairs meant bringing him into the new home she shared with Niki—the safe space she had fought so hard to create. But the thought of Niki, of all the unknown dangers, made her nod.
Her voice was firm, setting a final boundary. “This is the last time I’m trusting you. If what you tell me today isn’t the truth, or if this is just another excuse to get close to me, then we never have to see each other again.”
“I know,” Alexander replied.
“No, thank you.” This time, Alexander got straight to the point. “I came to find you tonight to tell you two things. First, I’ve investigated the people who were following you. I think they’re connected to the Gaylord family. Second, I’m not getting close to Lorie because I want to marry her. I’m doing it to uncover the truth about what happened to my mentor.”
Danielle’s fingers tightened around her water glass. The Gaylord family? His mentor’s case? These were things Alexander had never mentioned before.
Seeing her reaction, Alexander continued, “My mentor was one of the country’s top aerospace engineers. The Gaylord family stole a core piece of technology he developed, framed him for leaking state secrets, and then had him murdered. I’ve been investigating this for years. Getting close to Lorie is my only way to find the evidence of what they did.”
“Then why,” Danielle asked, her voice steady, “are the people stalking me connected to the Gaylord family?”

I hope there will be another male character with stronger present than alexander to have the end game with daniele. OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
