After Kirsten said her piece, she advised Danielle to think it over carefully before hanging up.
Danielle lowered her gaze, the hand holding her phone trembling slightly. Kirsten had hit the nail on the head, striking the very core of her thoughts. She really did care whether Alexander lived or died. As long as he was alive, she felt she could afford to let their conflict drag on however she wanted. But Kirsten’s words were a stark reminder. It was true—at any moment, he might decide he couldn't take it anymore and just… leave.
So what was keeping him alive right now? Danielle knew the answer all too well: the safety of her and their daughter. He couldn't let go because he was worried, and so he endured the pain.
A memory surfaced in her mind—something Alexander had once said to her. In a fit of anger, she had told him, "I wish you were dead." The expression on his face had shifted almost imperceptibly as he replied, "Now is not the time." At that moment, his response had seemed strange, but she hadn't given it a second thought. Now, her heart clenched as she took a deep breath.
Danielle put her phone away and saw that he was still standing downstairs. She pursed her lips, gathered the trash from the bin in the living room, and headed down, still in her loungewear. As she descended the stairs, she deliberately avoided his gaze, approaching him from the side.
"It's so late. Did you need something from me?"
Alexander stiffened at the sound of her voice. "Just passing by."
Danielle looked at him and nodded.
He glanced at her. "What are you doing down here so late?" His eyes fell on her thin clothes. "Aren't you cold?"
She shook her head. "If you're not cold just standing here, why would I be?"
Alexander frowned, then lifted his wrist to check his watch. "I'm leaving."
"Would you like to have breakfast together tomorrow morning?" Danielle asked, watching him.
His movement to turn away froze. He looked back at her, his dark eyes holding an unreadable emotion. But his expression remained cool, and his voice was just as icy. "There's no need. I don't eat breakfast."
"Just leave it there," he said, his tone flat and indifferent, devoid of any warmth or emotion.
Danielle said nothing more and placed the file on his desk as requested. "If there's nothing else, Mr. Davidson, I'll be going."
He gave a curt, expressionless nod.
As Danielle turned to leave, her body suddenly swayed. She steadied herself with one hand on the desk, while the other went to her temple.
Alexander's eyes darkened. "What's wrong?"
She rubbed her temple, her lips pressed together. "Probably just low blood sugar. I didn't eat breakfast."

OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
