Worse, it had all been arranged by her father, which made it even harder for her to accept.
Alexander looked at her forlorn profile, a flicker of understanding in his eyes. After a moment's silence, he spoke slowly. “If you don’t want him to go, maybe you could try to fight for it.”
“Fight?” Rebecca laughed self-deprecatingly. “My father never easily changes a decision he’s made.”
“Besides, Sammie himself agreed to the engagement. What reason do I have to fight for him?”
Sammie had done everything a lover would do. And yet, he insisted there was no love between them.
The living room fell silent again.
An unknown amount of time passed.
Rebecca stood up and tidied her medical kit. “I’ll leave the medicine here. Remember to take it on time, and come for your follow-up appointment next week.”
“And try to control your emotions. Don’t make me get another emergency call like this.”
Alexander nodded without a word.
Rebecca turned and walked to the door. When she reached the entryway, she paused without turning back and said softly, “Alexander, don’t be like me. Don’t wait until you’ve lost something to regret it.”
With that, she opened the door and disappeared into the night.
Leaning against the sofa, Alexander stared at the doorway for a long time, his gaze unwavering.

After leaving the estate, Rebecca pulled open the driver's side door. As she bent to get in, she caught sight of a figure in the passenger seat.
Sammie was sitting there in a black suit, his posture as straight and unyielding as a pine tree. His profile was cold and hard, as if he had been waiting for a long time.
For so many years, he had always been like this—focusing all his attention on her, yet never expressing his own emotions, never revealing a hint of what was on his mind.
Rebecca looked at his rigid profile, a strange irritation rising in her chest, mixed with a sourness she herself didn't recognize.
She suddenly found it amusing and let out a derisive snort. “Sammie, do you think you hold all the cards?”
“All these years, you’ve been by my side, providing me with everything I’m used to, fulfilling my every need.”
Her voice grew lower, trembling slightly. “You’ve taken care of my life so meticulously that I don’t even have a single friend.”
“Everyone knows that Rebecca has Sammie attached at her hip. No one dares to get close to me, and no one can easily enter my life.”
She took a deep breath, her eyes locked on him. “But just as I’ve gotten used to your presence, accustomed to you protecting me, you suddenly tell me you’re getting engaged? That you’re leaving me?”
These words had been stuck in her heart for too long, like a thorn causing a sharp, constant pain. She had always thought things would go on like this, that he would forever be her bodyguard, forever by her side.

OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
