“Yes, Mr. Sammie,” Lamont replied dutifully. Sammie gave Rebecca one last look, his eyes filled with a host of unspoken emotions. Then, without saying more, he turned and strode away, his footsteps echoing down the hall before vanishing into the darkness.
Rebecca stared at the empty corridor, a suffocating tightness in her chest. She let out a soft, bitter laugh that only she could hear. “What a noble excuse.” She saw right through him. He was just trying to keep his distance, probably to avoid upsetting his beautiful fiancée. Putting on a respectable front while trying to wash his hands of her—what a hypocrite.
