Alexander’s eyes were like chips of ice, his face so pale it was almost translucent. The gauze on his chest was stained with a startling patch of red; his wound had clearly reopened from the emotional turmoil. He stood unsteadily on his feet. His gaze locked onto Danielle, and a tidal wave of emotion—heartbreak, fury, despair, and an unspeakable sense of powerlessness—crashed through him, threatening to swallow him whole.

“Alexander,” Lorie purred, her voice carrying a lazy amusement. She casually swung the steel whip in her hand, her tone light, but every word was a dagger to his heart. “Look. Your woman is right here, in my hands. Her life, and yours, are resting in my palm.”

Alexander’s fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white, his nails digging into his palms and drawing blood. His voice was cold and hard. “What do you want?”

“It’s simple,” Lorie said, taking a step closer. Her eyes burned with a possessive fire as she stared at him. “Cut all ties with Danielle. Get engaged to me. Become the son-in-law of the Gaylord family again. If you nod, I’ll let her go immediately and never touch a hair on her head again.” She paused, a cruel smile twisting her lips. “Otherwise, I’ll continue to torture her until she stops breathing. I will make you watch with your own eyes as the woman you cherish takes her last breath in my hands.”

“Don’t!” Danielle cried out, lifting her head. She looked at Alexander, tears streaming down her face. “Alexander, don’t agree to her terms! It’s not worth it! I’d rather die than have you compromise yourself for me!”

She knew Lorie’s obsession all too well. When that woman went mad, she was capable of anything. If Alexander agreed to the engagement, he would be stepping into an abyss from which there was no return. He would not only lose his freedom but would also be completely controlled by the Gaylord family, and he would never have the chance to uncover the truth about what happened all those years ago.

Alexander looked at Danielle’s tear-streaked face, at the horrific wounds covering her body, and his heart felt like it was being crushed by an invisible hand, the pain so intense he could hardly breathe. How could he bear it? How could he bear to watch her suffer so much for his sake? How could he bear to watch her slowly die right in front of him?

Danielle shook her head, tears blurring her vision. It felt as if a ball of cotton was lodged in her throat, and she couldn't make a sound. She looked at Alexander, at the deep-seated guilt and pain in his eyes, and a wave of despair finally and completely drowned her.
