His eyes darted around the corner, and when he spotted the textbooks scattered on the ground, he bent down, grabbed one, and made a show of tearing it apart.
“Don’t you dare!”
Raffy panicked, scrambling up from the ground and lunging to get his book back, but Bacon simply kicked him hard in the stomach.
The kick sent Niki into a rage.
Forgetting any sense of decorum, she charged at Bacon, scratching and clawing at him.
Bacon howled in pain as she left red marks all over his face. The other boys standing nearby were stunned, trying to pull the two apart but getting pushed back by Niki's ferocious charge.
The corner devolved into chaos.
The sounds of crying, shouting, and screaming drew the attention of a passing teacher.
Horrified by the scene, the teacher rushed over and pulled Niki and Bacon apart.
Bacon’s face was scratched up, his clothes were torn and crooked, and he was a mess of tears and snot.
Niki wasn’t much better off. Her hair was a mess and her small face was smudged with dirt, but she held her chin high, glaring at Bacon as if she wasn't finished with him.
Raffy stood beside her, his face pale with fear, clutching the corner of Niki's shirt.
“What is going on here!” the teacher demanded, her face white with anger as she surveyed the chaotic scene.
Bacon’s crying intensified. He pointed a shaky finger at Niki and Raffy, sobbing out his accusation. “Teacher! They hit me! Raffy is the son of a traitor, and I just said a few words about it, and Niki attacked me!”
The teacher’s expression soured.
She was aware of Raffy’s family history and Bacon’s background.
Without bothering to find out what really happened, she immediately scolded Niki and Raffy. “No matter what happened, it’s wrong to resort to violence. You two, I’m calling your parents to the school!”
