The air in the study was as still and heavy as stagnant water, the ink blot spreading on the paper like the rift that now lay between the grandfather and grandson.
Alexander kept his eyes downcast, the veins on his hands subtly prominent as his thumb unconsciously traced the seam of his trousers, but he didn't offer another word of defense.
The patriarch’s white eyebrows were knotted together, his grip so tight on the brush that it seemed about to snap.
Just then, the study door was pushed open gently, and Danny’s figure appeared in the doorway. He was dressed in an immaculate, custom-tailored suit, his hair slicked back perfectly.
A polite smile was fixed on his face, but his eyes swept over the tense atmosphere, taking everything in. He strode in with a steady gait, his tone dripping with feigned concern.
"Grandfather, what’s going on? I heard your voice from a distance. Did someone upset you?"
His words were like a stone tossed into the water, seemingly meant to calm the situation but in reality, a deliberate act of feigned ignorance, laced with a hint of someone eager to watch the drama unfold.
Alexander looked up, his gaze as cold as a blade. Danny was his sister Paula's husband. For years, the Jamison family had leaned on the Davidsons' support to claw their way from being an unknown small company to gaining a precarious foothold in the business world. Now, with the Davidson family in turmoil, he was undoubtedly eager to stir the pot and carve out a piece for himself. The patriarch shot Danny a look, his expression sour.
He just snorted and turned his back, staring at the family creed hanging on the wall without a word, clearly having no time for his opportunistic son-in-law. Danny’s smile faltered for a second before he smoothed it back into place. He walked over to Alexander, clapping him on the shoulder with practiced familiarity, his tone overly affectionate.
"Alex, Grandfather is getting on in years. His health can’t take this kind of stress. You should be more understanding. Is there anything you can't discuss calmly? Why must you provoke him? It wouldn't look good if word got out, would it?" Alexander sidestepped his touch, his shoulder tensing slightly.
His voice was devoid of warmth.
"My affairs are no concern of Mr. Jamison's. Shouldn't you be more worried about your own company's mess, Mr. Jamison?"
At that, Danny's expression shifted almost imperceptibly.
The Jamison family was having cash flow problems, staying afloat only because of a few joint projects with the Davidsons.
He thought he had kept it quiet, but he hadn't expected Alexander to be fully aware of the situation.
"Alexander!" Danny snapped, his face darkening as Alexander hit a nerve. He dropped the pretense of warmth.
"Don't push your luck! This family's legacy was built by our ancestors. What gives you the right to be the sole decision-maker? Paula is a Davidson by blood, and her children carry the Davidson name. Why shouldn't they inherit part of the family business? You just got a head start and stepped on our backs to get to the top!"
Alexander looked at his sputtering rage and found it utterly ridiculous. He slowly stood up, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt with deliberate slowness.
"On what grounds? On the grounds that I single-handedly propped up this legacy. It was me who stabilized the family after the Chapmans fell, withstanding pressure from all sides. It was me who personally guarded our core technology when foreign rivals were circling like vultures. And it was me who led The Davidson Group through one breakthrough after another to achieve what it is today. And Paula?"
He paused, his gaze sweeping over Danny as if looking at a court jester.
"What has she done besides cause trouble while trading on the family name? She can't even read a financial report or produce a single project proposal. On what grounds does she deserve a share of this company?"
"You!" Danny was left speechless, his chest heaving as he pointed a trembling finger at Alexander, unable to form a coherent response.

Although she was one of the protagonist (and best friend of Danielle), I'm really annoyed with Kristen. What does she actually want? She wants to be completely free from Gian, whatever their business is. But when Gian doesn't care about her, she gets annoyed and overthinks. Hey, Kristen, the world doesn't revolve around you. You may follow your own feelings, but that doesn't mean you can ignore other people's feelings at all!...
It seems like this novel will end at chapter 5000. Every time one issue ends, another one pops up, and it seems like the author is just trying to drag it out. I'm starting to get tired of reading it....
I hope daniele will have no end game with alexander since whatever the reason is, he only give her too much grievencess. I hope there will be another male character with stronger present than alexander to have the end game with daniele. Hated that in the name of love or protection alexander can treat another woman better, not just once, but with this new lorie girl... Oh my blood pressure getting higher cause by the new plot :(...
