She was tired. Tired of guessing his motives, tired of letting her emotions be dragged around by his every move, tired of struggling in this shattered relationship.
She just wanted to find a job, live quietly, and leave the past behind.
Gian's outstretched hand froze in the air. Slowly, he pulled it back, curling his fingers into a tight fist until his knuckles turned white.
He knew she was truly done. She didn't want any ties to him.
Pushing her would only make her resent him more and deepen his own misery.
They stood under the streetlamp in suffocating silence. The air was thick with tension, bitterness, and an unspoken reluctance to let go.
Finally, Gian spoke. His voice was deep and raspy, carrying the weight of surrender. "Okay. I won't force you. I won't bother you anymore."
"Whatever you want, I'll respect it."
He looked at her, his eyes brimming with longing, as if trying to carve her image into his soul.
"Just... take care of yourself. No matter how busy work gets, remember to eat. Don't stay up too late."
"If you ever run into trouble, even if you won't come to me, go to Danielle. Don't carry it all alone."
Kirsten didn't respond. She turned her head away to stare at the nearby oak tree, refusing to let him see the red rimming her eyes.
Gian knew she didn't want any more interactions with him.
He took a deep breath, fighting the crushing pain in his chest. Giving her one last look, he turned and walked away.
His steps were slow. He looked back repeatedly, but until he stepped out of the pool of light and disappeared into the dark street, Kirsten never called out his name.

Rubbing her throbbing temples, she checked the screen. It was an unknown number. After a few seconds of hesitation, she picked up. "Hello?"
"Is this Ms. Kirsten Delaney? This is HR from Summit Tech. Congratulations, you've passed the interview."

The voice was warm and professional. Kirsten froze, then processed the words. She felt no joy—only a messy knot of conflicting emotions.
She and Luna had both passed. They were going to spend the next month as direct rivals. The irony was almost laughable.
"Understood. Thank you," she said, her tone completely neutral.
Hanging up, she sat on her bed and stared blankly at the wall for a long time.

Although she was one of the protagonist (and best friend of Danielle), I'm really annoyed with Kristen. What does she actually want? She wants to be completely free from Gian, whatever their business is. But when Gian doesn't care about her, she gets annoyed and overthinks. Hey, Kristen, the world doesn't revolve around you. You may follow your own feelings, but that doesn't mean you can ignore other people's feelings at all!...
It seems like this novel will end at chapter 5000. Every time one issue ends, another one pops up, and it seems like the author is just trying to drag it out. I'm starting to get tired of reading it....
I hope daniele will have no end game with alexander since whatever the reason is, he only give her too much grievencess. I hope there will be another male character with stronger present than alexander to have the end game with daniele. Hated that in the name of love or protection alexander can treat another woman better, not just once, but with this new lorie girl... Oh my blood pressure getting higher cause by the new plot :(...
