Danielle's heart ached as she gently touched his arm. "Let's go upstairs and get you changed first. You don't want to catch a cold, especially with your condition..."
"Let's eat first," Alex cut in, his voice kept low. "The kids are starving."
Niki and Raffy were indeed famished. After being caught in the torrential rain on the mountain road and going through such a scare, they were now quietly holding hands, their little faces etched with exhaustion.
Unable to argue further, Danielle simply nodded and followed Alex into the hotel's restaurant.
This was one of the few high-end resort hotels in the suburbs. It was quiet and highly private.
She had specifically chosen it as a place for them to relax and unwind. Neither of them expected to stumble upon clues about Harold back-to-back, nor to find themselves plunged into another wave of anxiety on a rainy night like this.
The restaurant wasn't crowded. The lighting was soft, and soothing background music played over the speakers. It should have been a warm, relaxing atmosphere.
Yet the moment Alex stepped through the doorway, his brow furrowed almost imperceptibly.
Danielle instantly picked up on his shift in demeanor. Following his line of sight, she discreetly scanned the room.
There really weren't many people. Just a few scattered tables of guests, mostly families or couples, all seemingly normal.
But it was precisely this normalcy that made her chest tighten.
Two tables of guests were being far too deliberate with their gazes.
They weren't staring openly. They pretended to eat, scroll through their phones, or chat with one another.
Danielle sat beside him, her heart hammering against her ribs.
It wasn't as if she hadn't faced danger before.
The trauma Harold had inflicted on them over the years had never truly faded. Kidnappings, threats, ambushes... she was no longer that naive, innocent woman.
But right now, she had Niki and Raffy with her. They were so young. The slightest hint of trouble was enough to send her into a spiral of absolute terror.
"What do you want to eat?"

Although she was one of the protagonist (and best friend of Danielle), I'm really annoyed with Kristen. What does she actually want? She wants to be completely free from Gian, whatever their business is. But when Gian doesn't care about her, she gets annoyed and overthinks. Hey, Kristen, the world doesn't revolve around you. You may follow your own feelings, but that doesn't mean you can ignore other people's feelings at all!...
It seems like this novel will end at chapter 5000. Every time one issue ends, another one pops up, and it seems like the author is just trying to drag it out. I'm starting to get tired of reading it....
I hope daniele will have no end game with alexander since whatever the reason is, he only give her too much grievencess. I hope there will be another male character with stronger present than alexander to have the end game with daniele. Hated that in the name of love or protection alexander can treat another woman better, not just once, but with this new lorie girl... Oh my blood pressure getting higher cause by the new plot :(...
