Danielle’s heart melted the instant she heard her daughter’s voice.

“Yes, everything’s fine here. Have you been good for Grandpa Hawthorne while I’ve been away?”

Niki replied with a cheerful hum, “I’ve been really good! And Grandpa Hawthorne likes me a lot. He even took me to the amusement park—we just got back today.”

Danielle smiled warmly. “That sounds fun. Just make sure you stay safe when you’re out, okay? What has Grandpa Hawthorne been teaching you lately?”

Niki started listing all the new lessons and projects she’d been working on with Grandpa Hawthorne.

Danielle paused, a little taken aback. Her daughter was picking things up so quickly—the foundation she had in math was already at a middle school level.

After chatting a little longer with Niki, Mr. Hawthorne took the phone.

Danielle steered the conversation to her daughter’s studies.

“Niki is incredibly bright—she’s even more gifted than you were at her age,” Mr. Hawthorne said, his tone full of pride. “She has a remarkable memory, and she’s already learning to apply what she knows.”

Of course, Niki was still so young. Her understanding could only go so deep, and even though she learned quickly and could use her knowledge well, there were limits to what a child her age could grasp.

But in time—who knew what she’d be capable of?

Danielle knew better than anyone how sharp her daughter was. That photographic memory really was a rare gift.

And if Niki learned to use that gift to its full potential… well, the possibilities were a little daunting.

For now, though, she was still a child, still figuring out what she loved.

If she ever chose to follow in Danielle’s footsteps, she’d be a force to be reckoned with.

Mr. Hawthorne sounded as if he could already see the promise of a brighter future for the country.

“You don’t need to worry about Niki too much,” he reassured Danielle. “She’s still so young. Everything will work itself out as she grows up.”

Sometimes, early talent can fade just as quickly as it appears.

Niki’s memory was extraordinary, but academic challenges would only get harder as she advanced.

Who could say what her limits might be?

After they finished talking about Niki, Mr. Hawthorne asked Danielle a few questions about the competition. When they finished, it was already five o’clock.

She had no desire to keep up appearances with Alexander, not here and certainly not now.

Her words could cut glass.

But Alexander didn’t seem fazed. He just watched her, a faint, ambiguous smile tugging at his lips, and said nothing.

The elevator arrived. Danielle stepped inside, Alexander following silently.

They rode down together and stepped out into the lobby.

Harold was waiting by the doors.

“Danielle,” he greeted her with a warm smile. “Let’s head in and order.”

She nodded.

Harold glanced at Alexander. “Mr. Davidson. Seems we keep running into each other lately.”

Alexander nodded, the hint of a wry smile playing at his lips. “Yes, it does seem that way.”
