It felt as though no matter how much time passed or what happened between them, his embrace was a place she would always long for.
That profound love was buried in the deepest corner of her heart.
Once Danielle's emotions had settled, Alexander gently released her, cupping her face in his hands to examine her closely. "Are you hurt? Did he do anything to you?"
Danielle shook her head, wiping away her tears with a small smile. "I'm fine. He didn't hurt me."
"He just kept me locked up here, cut off from the outside world."
Alexander finally breathed a sigh of relief. "How did you manage to overpower these men? That was incredibly dangerous."
Danielle looked down, a little sheepishly. "I slipped a sedative I extracted from a local plant into their food when they weren't looking. I'd been observing my surroundings and noticed a plant on the island that causes drowsiness in small doses, so I…"
Alexander just looked at her. In such a hopeless, isolated situation, she hadn't panicked. Instead, she'd calmly assessed her environment and found a way to save herself.
Alexander's throat tightened, and he lowered his gaze. "I'm sorry."
He kept apologizing, as if everything that had happened was his fault.
Just then, the sound of a ship's horn echoed from outside, and Nash Langley hurried in to report.
"Mr. Davidson, the Strategic Intelligence Agency's support fleet has arrived. Mr. Atwood is here too."
Alexander nodded. They walked out of the villa.
On the water, several SIA vessels were anchored nearby. Gian stood on the deck of one, waving with a smile when he saw them.
"Danielle, are you alright?" Gian came ashore and walked briskly over to her, his voice full of concern.
"I'm fine. Thank you, Gian," Danielle said with a grateful smile.
When Gian and Danielle finished their conversation and returned, they found Alexander still there.
"What's wrong with him?" Gian asked in a low voice. "He seems different, like he's a changed man."
Danielle averted her gaze and gave a faint smile. "He's fighting his own demons."
She paused, her voice so soft it was almost lost to the waves. "He thinks that being with me will only bring me more danger."
"He's blaming himself for what happened with Nathan."
Gian followed her gaze and saw Alexander stub out his cigarette on the railing, the force of the gesture turning his knuckles white.
"He's always like that, shouldering everything himself," Gian sighed. "But he forgets that you've never been someone who needs his protection. You two are meant to face the storms together."

I hope daniele will have no end game with alexander since whatever the reason is, he only give her too much grievencess. I hope there will be another male character with stronger present than alexander to have the end game with daniele. Hated that in the name of love or protection alexander can treat another woman better, not just once, but with this new lorie girl... Oh my blood pressure getting higher cause by the new plot :(...

OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
