Danielle’s hand tightened on the mouse, a cold sensation spreading through her fingertips. She could feel Lorie’s expectant and probing gaze on her, as if waiting for an answer that would prove some kind of point.
The sound of a colleague’s footsteps echoed from outside the lab, and a distant meeting room door opened and closed. The small noises sharpened Danielle’s thoughts. She took a deep breath and spoke, her voice calm but firm. "Your engagement party is an important day for you. You should invite the people closest to you. Alexander and I are just co-parents now. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to attend, and it could easily cause unnecessary misunderstandings."
She paused, looking at Lorie, and added, "I'll have Niki offer you both his congratulations at the right time. But I won't be coming."
A flicker of disappointment crossed Lorie’s face, but she didn’t press further. She turned back to her monitor, though the force of her fingers on the keyboard was noticeably heavier than before. The coffee on the console grew cold as the atmosphere between them returned to one of strict professionalism.
Danielle stared at the data refreshing on the screen, her heart surprisingly calm. She knew that declining the invitation was not just a final farewell to her past relationship but also a clear boundary for her future. She would no longer be involved in Alexander’s personal life, nor would she let old grievances affect her work or her present.
By evening, the data calculations were finally complete. They submitted the final results to the server for a test run. Seeing the 'Submission Successful' notification pop up on the screen, Danielle breathed a sigh of relief.
