Lorie bit her lip and whispered, “Alex, let it go. Let’s not argue with him. I can manage.” She was well aware of Gian’s influence and knew she wouldn’t win this fight, so she chose to back down for now.
Alexander instructed the waiter, “Leave the dish. And bring Miss Gaylord a glass of lemonade.”
The waiter quickly complied and retreated from the room. The atmosphere in the private dining room grew quiet again, but it was thick with an awkward tension.
Danielle picked up her fork, took a small bite of the pork shoulder, and let the familiar taste spread across her tongue. But this time, it stirred no emotion in her. After the earlier confrontation, she saw more clearly than ever that she and Alexander were truly in the past.
Watching her eat quietly, Gian also picked up his fork and placed a piece of meat on her plate. “Eat slowly, there’s no rush.”
The farewell dinner concluded in a cloud of silence and discomfort. As they left the restaurant, Gian naturally took Danielle’s hand, gave a curt nod to Alexander and Lorie, and turned to leave without a hint of hesitation.

After helping Danielle into the car, Gian’s gaze rested on her calm profile. “You know, Alexander isn’t really over you,” he said softly. “His heart was never with Lorie.”
Danielle gave a slight smile, her fingertips tracing the edge of the car door. “It doesn’t matter whose heart he’s with anymore,” she said, her voice indifferent. “He was the one who made his choice. Now he has to live with it. A relationship can’t be sustained by one person’s efforts. What’s lost is lost.”
Gian smiled. “I’m glad you see it that way.” He helped her settle into the passenger seat before walking around to the driver’s side.
