The Wolf Came on Christmas (Johanna and Alexander) novel Chapter 105

He had forgotten the proximity of his enemy to his woman. There was no doubt about that, but it still wasn’t confirmed that…

“…but you still can’t prove that what you’re saying is true,” I insisted.

My statement seemed to amuse him more than anger him.

“Well, well; what is this? You’ve got yourself a defender?” the lion sneered, and looked at Alexander with mockery. “She’s not as pretty as your wife; I mean, she’s different from her. But she’s very, very pretty – an American beauty… Is this your new female, then? Your mourning for the other one didn’t last long. That’s new. You dogs usually grieve for years over the death of your women.”

That was a wake-up call not only for Alexander, but for me too.

Somehow, my feelings were brutally crushed by the last phrase that came out of that monster’s mouth, and I clenched my teeth, fighting to keep the tears from spilling uncontrollably down my cheeks.

Why did it suddenly hurt so much?

Beside me, Nika was boiling with rage and struggling wildly.

“Why are you doing this? Why?” I asked, eyes flooded. “What do you want?”

What else could I want from that monster? A convincing answer. Anyway, who knew what he was going to do to me once he finished with them?

But I knew he wouldn’t answer anything logical or reasonable. He was insane – twisted. A psychopath who enjoyed hurting others. He wouldn’t just kill Alexander; I was sure he would kill André too, everyone. That man wasn’t right in the head. I couldn’t feel any more emotions at once. Anger. Hate. Disgust. I had never felt more alive – or more furious or terrified.

And this wasn’t even my war.

The lion kept watching Alexander for a moment, enjoying his defeat.

“I think no matter what objections you want to raise, ma belle, he knows what I’m saying is true. If he knew his dear wife at all, he knows very well she would have given anything to find someone who could help her. Don’t blame her she was an innocent woman. He’s the one

who must pay for what he did to her.” He turned slowly toward Alexander, and smiled, showing his fangs with all the elegance and arrogance in the world before asking innocently, “Or wouldn’t you rather it were you who was dead instead of her?”

Silence took over the office, and for a moment the only sounds were Nika’s nervous breathing, Alexander’s almost inaudible whines, and I swear I could feel the drumming of my own heart, out of control with terror.

The white wolf didn’t answer him, but deep inside I knew that if he could have, his answer would have been yes.

I felt in every fiber of my body the pain consuming him, the seriousness with which he weighed his enemy’s words, and the urge to scream at Alexander lodged in my throat – to tell him not to let that blowhard defeat him, that he was a great father and surely had been a great husband, and-

Nothing.

I knew nothing, and I couldn’t open my mouth either.

What the hell was going to happen there? The cold of anticipation threw me off balance.

The enemy sensed it, and brought a hand to the bridge of his nose, frustrated.

“Oh, I didn’t think that at a moment like this you’d become boring. This was easy.” The lion’s light-blue eyes settled on me again, and he added, “Well, so far… the score is two to one.” He emphasized that the werewolves (with a bit of help) had killed two of his men, and they had, in turn, taken Hans’s life. A chill ran through me when I saw a massive smile spread across the lion’s lips, and his big white fangs were a horrifying sight to me. “Why don’t we even the

score, to start?”

And with that, he raised the pistol without hesitation, and before anyone could do anything, he shot Nika directly.

The deafening crack of the gunshot made me spring up onto my knees; I couldn’t hold back a

scream.

I heard the bullet whine past me, and from the werewolf woman’s gagged mouth came a muffled moan.

Nika collapsed backward, striking a small table piled with papers that fell to the floor along with her, and she writhed, howling for a moment, as a pool of blood spread across the white floor.

She gradually stopped moving.

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out of my throat except a low moan.

Before I could find my voice to scream at the top of my lungs, horrified, Alexander’s savage, furious roar thundered across the entire room:

I brought my hands up to my head to strike the lion’s hand, and he grabbed me hard under the armpit, fast, and his violent fingers clamped my chin as he hid behind me.

He would use me as a shield – I didn’t matter to him.

I felt the cold of the gun barrel kiss my temple just as Álvaro came back into the office.

Alexander stopped dead in his tracks, tail raised and rigid in a display of limitless rage. The bristling fur on his body made him look even bigger, more intimidating.

But it didn’t seem to scare the cats at all.

The panther leaned on the doorframe and hissed a little laugh, interested.

It was a kind of deadly triangle: any step the white wolf took, either he died or I died.

Could I feel more useless?

I tried not to cry. Not to faint either.

I couldn’t breathe, and everything looked blurry through my tears.

In my ear, the lion’s seductive voice declared:

“… Well, now, whoever scores the next point, wins,” he told Alexander, with a purr of pleasure that revealed a smile on his lips. “Either I kill you, or you kill me. Or I kill her. You choose, dog. I already told you before: either way, you lose.”
