The wolf snorted in his place and threatened to take a step in our direction, but Álvaro moved to intercept him and stood in his way, stopping him. A very fierce growl came from the panther’s throat, which in my ears mixed with the furious pounding of my own runaway heart. Like this, I couldn’t do anything. I was more useless than a fly on the wall.
I think it was at that moment when I calmly accepted that I was going to die, no matter what happened…
An elbow. A kick with the heel. I still could…
And he still could shoot me in the head and end everything. But if that happened, wouldn’t Alexander have a chance? If I died, he would no longer have anything to worry about and could fight without fear. He could take revenge. He could save his son. It terrifies me to think that for a moment I considered sacrificing myself if that meant lifting a burden from him, and giving him a chance to save his life, at least. Maybe I was already so desperate that I saw no other coherent way out for any of us. I don’t know where I found enough courage to convince myself of that idea, until Alexander’s voice thundered again inside the office, with a powerful and chilling tone:
“WHY DID YOU SHOOT HER!? SHE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS!!” he howled, furious.
Just like Anya, one could tell that.
The lion laughed behind me, and a gurgling in his throat preceded his reply:
“She’s just a female. I’m not interested,” he said in an almost disdainful tone. “That bitch doesn’t have that beautiful fur you have, and she doesn’t even weigh enough for her meat to be of any use, I’d starve if I had to depend on that.”
Alexander wrinkled his muzzle, and for a moment looked at Álvaro and then back at me:
You mean you intend to kill me to eat me too?” he demanded, incredulous,
Álvaro pulled back the lips of his velvety black muzzle, showing his fangs, and this time he was the one who answered:
“Why do animals hunt in the wild?” he asked, almost mockingly. “To eat. To survive. And I haven’t eaten properly in several days. I’m hungry. We’re both hungry.”
His voice sent terrible chills through me, making my spine shudder from top to bottom. It was a strong, masculine voice, but with a velvet undertone that shaped each word almost like a caress, without missing a single note. It was someone who could sing, do magic with

his own voice. Álvaro was just like the lion.

I understood why they were “partners,” and worked so well together. They were the same kind of scum. They were both equally insane.
“I admit it, at first it was just for the fur,” the lion continued, in a soft and purring tone, almost amused. “With how pretty that fur of yours is… white, immaculate. Just look at yourself. Skinning you was a good idea. And you have children, an extra benefit I didn’t expect, two pups with the future ahead of them. They could be magnificent attack dogs, with the proper training. Do you know what would be truly crazy? Sending them back to their clan as adults, and making them bring it down from the inside for me; after all, both are little princes of their race. Imagine the return of the lost princes.” One could almost hear a smile in his voice. “But, now that you mention it, it’s hard to get food in winter, and… How much do you weigh? One hundred fifty, one hundred seventy kilos? You’re a bit scrawny compared to your little friends, but there’s still a lot of meat there. A good hunter doesn’t waste a single gram of the prey. I could turn you into a thousand useful things, you know?”
I endured it in silence until then. The mere fact that he was thinking of taking Andre and Sasha to train them as his killers was what churned my stomach the most, and a visceral rage set my body on fire. I would not let him touch the children, even if I had to die to achieve it. My death would only make Alexander decide to tear their heads off, without hesitation. I twisted under the lion’s arm grip and although I felt the movement of the gun barrel against my skin, I couldn’t stop myself from shouting at him angrily:

“SICKO! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU SAYING!?” I howled, still struggling.
Although Alexander barely made a move, the panther tensed and that was the only warning he needed to do nothing else. I tried to turn around, wishing to see the impassive face of that madman who wouldn’t let me move, but it was useless.
“I know, don’t worry. I know I’m not normal,” he admitted. “None of us are normal, we don’t
play according to the book. But what does a simple woman like you know about that?”

.. bastard, WHY!? WHY THE CHILDREN!? THEY’RE JUST CHILDREN!” I screamed, and I
Álvaro silenced him with a sound that was more like a laugh. His black tail twisted in delight.
“You’ve got good t**s,” the lion continued, unmoved by the thunderous voice of the werewolf, “and good hips. I think giving birth won’t be a problem for you, you’d be a good mother. It might even be fun.”
It disgusted me so much, so much, that swallowing the strength that churned my stomach, I
shouted at him:
“YOU’RE CRAZY IF YOU THINK I’LL AGREE TO ANYTHING LIKE THAT!”
He laughed again. The damned man laughed at me again, and I felt his lips near my ear:
“… oh, so you are his new female? What an extraordinary turn of events,” he said with a satisfied purr. “One more reason for that dog to fight like a fury, to give everything he’s got! And if he chose you, I have no doubt. You must be an excellent female.”
“Are you not listening to me? YOU’RE INSANE!” I shouted again.
“You’ve said that many times. Enough.”
His hand returned to my jaw and squeezed my chin hard; for a moment I thought he was going to break my bones. With a groan I showed the pain, but it didn’t take away my desire to

“And what about Álvaro?” I insisted, almost spitting the words. “I bet he won’t like you taking all the credit, and the girl. I shot him!”
“I know that too. And Álvaro knows very well that he needs to find himself a female, he needs to breed. He’s not at an age to waste time, and neither am I. Isn’t that right?” he finished, speaking to his partner, who nodded slowly, with a sadistic, animal smile full of sharp, yellowed fangs. After a pause, the lion continued in a more animated tone: “Hey, maybe we’ll share you! If my dear friend doesn’t mind, of course. That would be great, many fewer problems! I’m on fire today, I can’t believe so many good ideas have occurred to me all at
once…”
