Connor pushed the door open and immediately pulled me close while the doctor and two of the nurses went after his mother who was speaking very fast, her entire body trembling.

Are you okay?Connor asked, cupping my face as he looked over at his mother being restrained by the staff members,

She was trying to lunge at me, or at both of us, her hands reaching forward and Connor stepped forward, putting himself between me and her

Run away! Or you will be caged hereHis mother was shouting and thrashing against the hold of the staff members.

Connor’s face was ashen as he looked at her and slowly pulled me closer to the door.

AahI winced and that’s when he looked down to check my wrist that his mother had scraped her nails against.

Shit! Your wrist

I’m fine,I said as he immediately looked around for a first aid kit.

Connor, relax, I am not hurt.

He looked at me and then over my shoulder at his mother again and his face crumpled even further like a deflated balloon.

Mom,He whispered even as she continued to point at him and repeat how he was a monster until the doctor pricked her neck with a needle, sedating her.

notmyson

She stopped thrashing and went limp before she was transferred to her bed.

Connor reached for the edge of the bed and covered her hand with his, very gently, and stood there with his head bent for a moment.

The doctor touched his arm. Come to my office, she said gently.

He nodded and turned around, and when he looked at me his eyes seemed moist.

I’m sorry, he murmured.

Don’t, I warned him.

I should have expected this. I didn’t think she would react like this

Connor.I whispered, placing my hand on his. This is not something you apologize for.

As youche

He looked at me and then at his mother sleeping, and then he walked to the door and I followed him.

I didn’t have the heart or the brains to sit inside the doctor’s office and listen to her so I waited outside, my mind reeling because of his mother.

She had seemed so fine and normal before but seeing him was like holding a matchstick in front of hay because it all blew up in a second.

When he stepped out of the doctor’s office, his shoulders were sagged and he looked so heartbroken that I didn’t have the courage to ask him what she said.

I only followed him outside the main gate and to the car as we sat in without a word and he began driving.

The drive home was quieter than the drive there.

I sat beside him and felt the weight of what I was carrying and thought about what his mother had said when she dug her nails in my wrist in a terrified whisper.

She believed her son was most definitely dead and Connor was a monster posing to be her son who was the source of all her misery.

My gaze flicked to Connor who kept staring straight ahead, all the warmth and humor stripped off from his body language.

His fingers held onto the steering too tightly, turning his knuckles almost white.

I thought of saying something nice, something reassuring but words failed me so I only sat feeling sorry for him.

He pulled up outside my house half an hour later and killed the engine.

He was the one to finally break the silence as he looked at me.

Thank you for coming, it means a lot to me

I wanted to,” I replied earnestly.

He nodded and looked away and I scrambled to say something than just stand around like an idiot,

Connor, your mom is truly

She used to make voices when she read,” he said suddenly to the windscreen.

I stopped talking as he raked a hand through his hair.

For a while today, she was that person. He paused, his voice coming out strained. I forget what it’s like when she’s there. Atleast, I got to see her like that after ages

He stopped and I couldn’t help but walk over and throw my hands around his neck. Connor turned to me, burying his face in my arms and I gently patted him, running my fingers through his soft hair.

We just were like that for a while, him taking deep breaths and me trying to rock him gently, saying what I wanted to with my actions because my mouth wasn’t cooperating.

He finally pulled away and turned back to the house. Go inside,he said. Your mother will want to see you.

Are you okay?I asked and he nodded. YeahHe looked at his watch Still got an hour to please Elise

I snorted and squeezed his hand once, wanting to hug and kiss him fiercely but deciding this was not the place nor the time to do that.

I was at the bottom of my front steps when he called out my name.
