The drive back should have taken twenty minutes but I wasn’t really tracking it.
The city moved past the windows and I drove without seeing it because my brain was somewhere else entirely–back in that room, watching my mother turn her face away.
She’d taken my name this morning along with that of Sienna’s as the doctor told me hastily over the phone while I’d sat in that office with the Harrington clause half–finished on my desk.
I felt something in my chest open that I usually kept very carefully closed.
Hope was a liability in my situation.
I’d learned it the hard way, the first time she’d had a good day and I’d let myself believe it meant something, but then the next few times had gotten progressively worse with her hating the sight of me, throwing things and shouting at me no matter how much I tried to calm her.
Hearing her ask for Sienna made that dangerous hope flare in my heart again and like a fool I begged her to visit my mother.
Sienna agreed without hesitation, and walked into that room with a smile. For the few minutes I watched their interaction, things almost seemed normal.
Mom smiled at her and they chatted for several minutes, mom smiling at something mundane Sienna said and that seed of hope dug its roots further into my heart, burrowing deep.
I’d wanted her there. Not just for my mother’s sake but for mine because Sienna in that room had felt like something complete. Two people I cared about, two people I….
I let that sentence go without finishing it.
The road turned and I turned the car with it, recalling the way my mother’s hands had been relaxed in her lap and the next they were gripping Sienna’s wrist while trying to be calm for my mother.
My mother had said something before it happened. I knew she had.
The same way I knew when Sienna was lying because she was bad at hiding things from people who were good at reading them. Sienna had given me a vague answer but I didn’t push it.
I didn’t know if she was right but she was too shaken and I had pushed her enough in the past few hours.
The mansion gates came into view and I’d been so inside my own head that I almost drove past them. catching it at the last second and turning in, and the gravel of the drive was loud under the tyres in the quiet of the afternoon.
1 sat in the car for a moment after I’d parked.

Chapter 108
I pressed my forehead briefly to the wheel and then got out.
London had been three days of vying for Elise Harrington’s approval and dancing to her tunes, of her baiting me but none of it had touched me the way she’d probably intended because I’d been thinking about Sienna
the entire time.
Just Sienna. The way her voice had gone completely unreliable when I gave her the massage and then her eyes when she said those hurtful things to me yet her body leaned into mine.
And that day, I realized something with a glaring clarity.
I wasn’t just obsessed with Sienna despite having slept with half a city’s worth of girls, feeling like an empty husk chasing just the needs of the body and my wolf.
The notorious playboy, Connor Ashford, was thoroughly and completely done for by his brother’s best friend since approximately age seven and had been running from that fact since approximately the same time.
There was just one other person in my life that I truly cared about, my mom, who hated me. So when Sienna angrily shunned me, me and my wolf felt the need to physically destroy something, bleed and fight rogues until I had killed every single one just so I dont take it out on the one girl I craved.
So I turned around and went back to my playboy ways, letting girls approach me, touch me, seduce me while sitting right in front of Sienna.
And Goddess help me, watching her jaw set and her eyes go dark while pretending she wasn’t watching had been the only thing that evening that had produced any feeling apart from rage at all.
My wolf hadn’t been interested and neither was I. The girls were beautiful and willing and I’d felt absolutely nothing, but had used them anyway as instruments of a game I was running on Sienna.
1 wasn’t exactly proud of that but it had worked, which she had subsequently confirmed by getting me to drop her home and then dropping a key into her own dress.
I was already thinking about her again and the sounds she made, the way she let me completely wreck her then care for her like she trusted me a hundred percent gave me a thrill nothing else could match.
I pressed the thought down and walked toward the entrance, not wanting to turn around and run to her again.
‘Connor.
Aaron’s voice fell on my ears and I noticed him materialize from the side of the entrance, which could not be a coincidence because he looked like he had been waiting for me. But I didn’t have the energy to waste on him so I ignored him and kept walking instead.
“I need to talk to you,” Aaron took a step toward me.
“No,” I said.
“I just need five minutes”
“Aaron” I stopped walking but didn’t turn around. “I would rather stare at a wall than spend five minutes
