I nodded and turned around. If I stayed another minute, I was genuinely afraid my composure would shatter.

Without another word, I slipped quietly away from the dining hall, keeping my chin high until I reached the large entrance doors.

But then I saw everybody staring at me, a few whispering to each other urgently. If I thought the insult in the dining hall had been a setback, the gazes of all the guests pinned on me was a whole new level of embarrassment.

For the first time all evening, I wished the marble floor would simply crack open and swallow me whole.

However, I looked at the secluded corner, one with a small balcony overlooking the gardens and made a beeline for it.

I just needed one quiet moment to breathe and collect myself before I faced the rest of the evening.

Ignoring the quiet murmuring around me, I reached the balcony and looked up at the sky. The sun had set long ago and now stars were scattered all around, the moon shining like the sky’s crowning jewel.

The moon goddess was said to bless us with mates, with love and a forever happily after. But I wasn’t sure if she had created anyone special for me.

I slowly turned to see a broad–shouldered man in his late forties standing only a few feet away, an expensive glass of whiskey dangling from one hand as his gaze wandered over me without the slightest hint of shame.

“Do you need something?” I asked, quickly regaining my composure.

He looked at a server passing by and whistled at him. The server came running towards him and the man grabbed a glass from the tray, holding it in front of me.

“I believe you need this” He said, eyes dancing from me to the glass.

“No thanks” I said a bit stiffly, hoping he would get the message but he only titled his head to the side.

“No? I believe every single guest present tonight heard you being ripped apart to pieces by some old man.”

His eyes raked me up and down, his gaze full of lust and greed.

“I am fine and want to be alone for a while”

He chuckled, leaning on the railing I had been standing close to and taking a long sip out of his own glass.

“You dont look fine. If anything, you look like you could enjoy some company and…. attention.”

Why was he being such a creep?

“I think you should leave” I stated in a clear voice but he shook his head.

“I think you should leave with me, baby. Though I didn’t really catch your name.”

Baby? The nerve of him!

“Listen, mister! This is the last time I politely ask you to fuck off!” I glared at him. Elder Johanson had already frustrated the hell out of me and now this unknown man was pissing me off.

His two friends chuckled behind him, eyes roaming over me. “She looks fiesty. Maybe we can show her a good time.”

All three of them laughed like that was a big joke and I only began to walk off but this man shot out a hand to block my way,

“What’s the rush darling? Nobody in the dining hall wants you there right now based on whatever we heard. You could spend some time with us and relax a little.”

I curled my fingers into fists, resisting the urge to slap the shit out of him.

“Are you deaf or dumb? Probably both. Do you have any idea who you are talking to?”

My breathing grew ragged because I was struggling to keep my anger in check.

The man chuckled, his gaze traveling below my face and resting on my cleavage as he liked his dry lips.

“I’ve been asking you your name all this time but you are such a tease. No worries, let me introduce myself first. I am Alpha Rory Graham of the…”

“I am Connor Ashford’s partner” I snapped at him and he blinked in surprise. Even the men who had been laughing earlier stopped abruptly.

Rory seemed to recover first.

“Connor? The alpha heir of the biggest pack is your partner?” He asked, a hint of mockery evident in his tone.

I folded my hands on my chest because the creep wouldn’t stop staring.

“Yes, and my eyes are up here”

I thought hearing Connor’s name would finally put some sense into him but he seemed undeterred.
