I had never heard anybody except Connor mention his mother before. And now Alpha Asher suddenly mentioned her in front of me, taking me by surprise.

I recalled my first meeting with his mom where she had yelled and screamed at him, thrown the cake away and been very enraged at him.

And then I recalled the white hot rage Connor had displayed last night. My brain was arriving at a conclusio I didn’t like.

Alpha Asher’s eyes stayed firmly on mine.

“Yeah, I bet he must have told you about how his mother lost her mind..”

I wasn’t sure how to respond to that so I only stayed silent, wondering how to respond to him.

“I…I have…”

Alpha Asher leaned forward, voice lowering a little.

“Then you must know that she also refuses to believe he is her son. Such is the corruption inside him. I’ve raised him to the best of my efforts but this darkness inside of him… it turned his mother insane.”

“Corruption?” I echoed out loud.

Alpha Asher sighed, his shoulders sagging a little.

“Why do you think he was sent away from this city, from this home in childhood?” alpha Asher asked me.

I opened my mouth then closed it because I had no idea what the answer was. Scratch that, I had never even thought about it before.

I had just been elated that he was gone from my life and then miserable to meet him in the diner after all this time…I hadn’t really wondered what had happened to him while he was gone.

“I have no idea, alpha” I answered truthfully.

Alpha Asher shook his head as if he was debating if I needed to know more. And he looked like he already regretted saying whatever he did.

His phone rang all of a sudden so he turned to pick it up and spoke to whoever it was on the other end.

Meanwhile, I only wondered what he meant by the words ‘darkness’ and ‘corruption: Was his mom not just ill but cursed somehow? And had some part of it been transferred to Connor?

Is that why he had been sent away from this place, from his home?

But then if he was so harmful why would Alpha Asher call him back and even expect him to lead the pack?

Alpha Asher was deep in discussion with someone about pack border regulations and had almost forgotten was standing right there.

But then he noticed me and wrapped up the discussion.

When he finally hung up, he set the phone down and studied me the way a man might study a chess piece b hadn’t decided whether to sacrifice or not.

“You managed to make him care,” he said at last. “After years of absence. After everything that happened between you as children. How?”

I fidgeted with my fingers nervously as he leaned on it a bit, looking at me again.

I pushed back the hair behind my ear. “I…we….sort of clicked.”

I answered lamely.

He gave me a small smile.

“I thought you both used to hate each other.”

I looked up at him in surprise, wondering how he had noticed that detail if he had been barely around when we were kids.

As if to answer my doubts, he said. “Connor had a rough childhood. I am sure he blames me for everything, for forgetting his mother and for bringing in another woman in the house. I am also well aware that Connor and Aaron don’t really have that sibling bond I had hoped for. But….”

He took a long, drawn out pause.

“…they have something in common. Something both care about and that is you.”

“I have been friends with Aaron all my life. And Connor…he is trying to be a better person since returning. Maybe since even before his return”

That was the simple truth, the one I chose to believe.

Alpha Asher nodded. “I am aware of that. I spent a lot of time and energy in ensuring this pack stays strong, that going forward both brothers work harmoniously but somehow their care about you is dividing them instead of bringing them together. Do you deny it?”

I couldn’t. The very reason I started this fake relationship was to get Aaron’s attention. I was the reason both the brothers were fighting.

“Connor had always been the hot headed one. But, at first, I thought it to be some petty squabble between siblings when I last caught them in the middle of a heated argument. And Connor flung Aaron into the bushes like he weighed nothing…like he had momentarily forgotten that it was his brother, not some enemy,
