I stepped out of the office and the first thing I did was look around for Maria. Luckily, she was faraway from me, outside the mansion and in the front yard with the elders.

That meant my little discussion with Alpha Asher would stay a secret. His words were buzzing in my ears a I was trying to make sense of it.

On one hand, I had to somehow not cause a rift between the two brothers but on the other, I was also supposed to help Connor get the alpha throne.

And then their father, the man who had previously threatened me to leave his sons alone, had now requeste me to be a bridge rather than a divide between them.

How was I even supposed to do it?

I was lost in thought and stood by the base of the stairs when my phone rang. Connor’s name flashed on the

screen.

I took a moment to calm my nerves and to forget how his father had feared him turning angry and violent like his mother and received the call.

“Hey, didn’t you have something urgent to talk about?”

Connor asked.

“Yeah, right. I just got distracted.” I mumbled but he noticed my voice and asked.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah. I was just planning a dinner menu for the elders” I replied the first excuse that popped up in my head.

“So are you coming or not?” Connor questioned and I nodded. “On my way”

Five minutes later I was outside his office door. I had raised my hand to knock on it when the door opened and I was suddenly swept inside.

I let out a startled gasp when I felt two strong hands grabbing me.

Llooked up to see Connor standing in front of me, his eyes dancing with amusement and a flicker of desire

His rough, calloused hands brushed leisurely over my shoulders before he pushed me onto the nearest wall.

Goddess, he had no business looking so hot when he had been working all morning. His hair was tousled and the topmost button of his shirt open

A dusting of light stubble adorned his razor sharp jawline and his adam’s apple had never looked so damn

“I have to up my game if my girl gets distracted with something as silly as dinner menu”

I stomped down on the rush of heat I felt when he called me his girl and gave him a look.

“Aren’t you ‘swamped with work’?”

“I can spare enough time for a quickie”

I widened my eyes at that and placed a hand on his chest to push him back even though my body revolted against that.

“No alpha. You should behave” I further pushed him back to give myself enough room to move and then snuck out of the small nook he had pushed me in.

Connor turned around, sighing dramatically, and let his back touch the wall instead.

“Are you avoiding me already?” Connor asked with a hint of a smile on his face but his voice betrayed him.

“Not really” I said with my back to him because I hadn’t mustered the courage to lie to him oh his face yet.

I walked towards his desk, pretending to sort out the mess of files and papers lying around. I also noticed a small knife on his desk and an apple core in the dustbin.

The same knife I had used to threaten him in our first meeting was sitting on his desk. Why was he carrying around?

Connor approached the desk as well and sat on his chair.

“Looks like it” He muttered, the smile gone.

I shook my head. “I just don’t want to be your distraction anymore.”

He furrowed his brows. “Okay, what is going on? You have that serious look on your face.”

I put the files aside and then looked at him.

“Nothing. You know the elders are here, the succession talks are going on and your behavior last night was a bit dramatic.”

Now, I had his full attention.

“Dramatic?”

“I know you cut off that man’s arms to save the but maybe it was a bit too violent given the nature of une event.”

All trace of the carlier lightheartedness was gone now the second I mentioned last night’s incident.

“Worked up?” He got up and slapped his desk with a bit more force than necessary. A muscle in his jaw tick and I straightened a little.

He noticed that slight reaction and narrowed his eyes.

“Did you just flinch because of me?”

I shook my head a bit too hastily. He caught the lie almost immediately.

“Goddess, Sienna. Do you think I would hurt you just because I cut off that man’s arms or something?”

“No”

That wasn’t reassuring and I knew it. But I was struggling to find the right words to convey my mixed feeling about my little chat with his father.

He took a step closer towards me and I stepped back.

“See!” He muttered and I blurted out.

“I think I am distracting you so until the succession talks are over and the official announcement of the alpha heir is announced, I want us to maintain some distance.”

That made him blink very slowly.

“What?”

I nodded. “Yes, I think it’s for the best. Let us just hold off on sex until then.”

He scoffed at that.

“You mean to say you dont want me near you for a few weeks or however long it takes for the elders to come to a decision? Are you sure about that?”

I wasn’t. But I couldn’t think of any other reason at the moment because my mind wasn’t helping me.
