Chapter 214

Sienna

It had to be him.

I turned and hurried after it, lungs still screaming. The car stopped neatly in front of the main steps. The driver’s door opened and Connor stepped out.

He was wearing a deep blue hoodie and jeans, the cap pulled over his head. His back was facing me and he raked a hand through his messy hair before stepping out completely and stretching himself.

A hand went to his mouth to stifle his yawn and he looked at the sunrays peeking up the horizon like it was the most beautiful thing ever.

The sunrise wasn’t bad per se but he looked so…calm and composed.

Even from a distance I saw him look so unbothered and…completely unaffected.

I had barely slept or eaten last night, he had cornered and lectured me, we fought bitterly and then he just left me stewing in my own guilt and anger.

And now he had appeared after spending all night away from home, looking like he had the time of his life.

He looked tired but in a good way and also like he had not spent a single minute replaying our argument.

The sight of him hit harder than the run.

I walked closer, still wheezing. “Connor, hi. Good morning or bad morning. I’m not sure yet. You look… awake…ish.”

He didn’t look up or give me any indication that he had heard me. He was already checking his phone, thumb moving across the screen.

“I got up early,” I tried again, voice rough from exercise and too little sleep.

“I did the jogging like you said. Well, most of it. My lungs are currently writing a strongly worded letter of complaint and considering legal action, but I finished the route. Sort of.”

He still didn’t glance at me and I had the urge to snatch his phone from me just so that he would look at me.

“I walked the last bit like, most of the last bit because my legs couldn’t take it any more” I laughed, mostly at myself. “I contemplated lying down in the grass and accepting my fate, but I finished somehow.”

He still continued ignoring me. I was about to open my mouth again when his phone rang.

He answered without glancing at me. But the change in his body language and overall behavior was instant. His shoulders loosened and a very genuine and warm smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

My heart almost melted at that sight even though it was not directed at me, nor was I the reason for it.

“Hey,” he greeted the caller, and the softness in his voice made something sharp twist under my ribs.

“Yes, dont worry. I just reached home. Did you reach safely as well?”

I narrowed my eyes and my ears twitched, trying to hear who he had spent the night with.

A female voice spoke from the other end.

“Yes, I did. It was an unforgettable night. Thanks for everything you did”

Unforgettable night?

My eyes almost popped at that.

“My pleasure” He answered and the words almost grated on my nerves.

Connor laughed under his breath at whatever she said, the sound low and easy. It was the same laugh he used to give me when he was teasing and quietly delighted at the same time.

I stood there like a particularly tragic lawn ornament and realised how much I had already missed that version of him.

“Let me know if you ever need me again, it was fun”

The more he spoke, the more my heart sank and my curiosity piqued. Had he truly found someone else to fake date and replace me?

Or maybe it was his ex that he went back to for a fun, unforgettable night.

I tried to not imagine what they must have been doing all night, how he must have made her breath hitch, drawn out those moans and called her a ‘good girl‘

He started walking toward the house while still on the call, completely absorbed.

Panic fluttered through me and I stepped directly into his path so he had to stop or walk through me.

He finally looked at me, still smiling and for a second I thought everything was alright between us. Then the smile vanished like someone had flipped a switch.

He simply stepped aside to continue walking ahead so I stepped in his path again.

“We have to talk about…” I began but he raised a finger as if to ask me to stop right there, and proceeded to talk sweetly on the phone.

“I’ll call you back later” he said into the phone, voice still soft for her. Then he ended the call and the cold. arrogant mask slid straight back into place.

“What do you want?”

The flatness of the question hurt more than if he had shouted.

I swallowed. “I… wanted just a minute of your time”

He looked at me like he would rather be anywhere else instead of being here, talking to me yet I continued.

“I realized I went a bit too far last night and I wanted to apologize to you about the same. I was embarrassed and angry and I said things I didn’t mean. It was just like old times when we used to bicker and I was blabbering. I was being defensive and stupid and my mouth moved faster than my brain, which, let’s be honest, is a recurring problem…”

His expression didn’t change in the slightest and he only raised his hand to look at his watch, then at me and started walking.

I reached for his hand and yanked it hard. “Where do you think you are going?”

His hand was still in mine, rough and calloused and so warm. He had taken the bandage off his neck and except for a little redness, most of his injuries had faded substantially.

We stood close to each other, his shoulder grazing mine and I looked up at him with mixed emotions.

“Let go of my hand” He said, eyes boring into mine.

“Then stop walking away when I am still talking” Anger mixed with hurt was evident in my voice.

“You wanted a minute, its over”

He looked away but my hand went up in a daring move to grab his chin to make him look at me.

The contact sent a tingling sensation down my fingers when the pads of my thumb grazed his soft stubble. “Talk to me, yell at me if you want. Don’t pretend you are unaffected by last night”

He now fully turned to look at me, all of his attention on me. This was what I wanted but boy there was a sharpness to his gaze that made me shiver.

“Stop touching me”

I let go of him immediately even if I didn’t want to.

“I apologized to you for last night and that’s how you behave?”

He tilted his head slightly, expression politely blank. “Something happened last night?”

I stared at him with my mouth half open.

Of all the things I had expected him to say to me, this wasn’t one. Had he hit his head somewhere?

“Uh…because of what I said in the gym? About you….about everything?”

His brows knit like he was having a hard time remembering it.
