The casual dismissal landed like a slap. He was either pretending the entire fight hadn’t happened or telling me it hadn’t mattered enough to remember.
Both options sucked.
And I wasn’t even feeling particularly hungry given his weird attitude but boy, the mention of food made my mouth water almost instantly.
My throat felt tight. “A light breakfast, please” I managed. “My legs are currently filing for divorce and my lungs are considering early retirement. But I wont eat anything excessive knowing that we have to train right away.”
I was blabbering like an idiot, trying humor as my coping mechanism because I fuckign didn’t know how to
react.
Atleast he wasn’t avoiding me now so that was a good sign. I could work with it for now.
He gave a short nod and walked past me toward one of the small tables set out in the garden.
I followed on legs that still trembled from the run and dropped into the chair opposite him with all the grace of a sack of potatoes.
“I also looked through the internet for some light exercises, watched how they did it and only followed that, didn’t try anything of my own”
He just leaned back on the chair, looking anywhere but me.
The second I opened my mouth to try again he lifted a hand and called for Maria without looking at me.
She appeared almost immediately with a tray like she knew what time he would arrive home and that he wanted to eat upon return.
Maybe, he had already informed her for all I knew.
She appeared with two more servants and began setting out the food.
I had been running on nothing but last night’s juice.
My stomach growled so loudly I wanted to crawl under the table and live there permanently. Then I actually looked at what she was serving and I rubbed my eyes to look at the spread.
Everything was aggressively and offensiv

Another tray held plates of sliced cucumbers, soft scrambled egg whites with no yolk in sight, a few salad dressings and a glass of plain, cold milk.
There was no sign of toast, jam or butter.
I waited for her to go back in the kitchen and bring back more stuff but she just stood there and I realized with a sinking feeling she wasn’t bringing any.
There was no mercy of any kind. It was the kind of breakfast that looked like it had been designed by someone who actively hated joy, the same kind of stuff he made Elder Johanson eat when he threw a tantrum.
Did he hate me as much as that old man now?
Maybe this was Connor’s cruel punishment for me. He wanted me to starve instead of sorting it out like an adult, even after I apologized several times already.
“Alpha Connor asked me to adjust the meals starting today,” she said, placing a large bowl of dark greens in the centre of the table. “He was quite specific.”
I felt the first warning bell go off in my head.
Connor didn’t look up from his phone but I could see his fingers typing aggressively.
“We’ve removed most of the refined carbohydrates from your diet so you won’t be eating white bread, pastries, or regular rice until the end of training.”
I stared at her like she robbed me of my kidney to sell it in the black market. “None?”
“None,” she confirmed pleasantly. “We’ve also cut the fried items and the sugary drinks and I am going to strictly monitor your diet just like the rest of the servants so nobody will serve you anything other than what is prescribed.”
My fingers tightened around the edge of the chair.
She set down a plate of pale, dull scrambled eggs in front of me and I felt my stomach shrivel up a bit at that sight.
“These are egg whites only and have high protein. The yolks have been left out.”
I looked at the sad, colourless eggs like I was in a jail. “The yolks are the best part.”
Connor finally muttered without glancing up. “They’re also the unnecessary part.”
Maria continued, undeterred. “And to increase your protein intake, we’ve added more greens like spinach, kale and broccoli, along with Greek yoghurt and grilled chicken for later.”
Hearing grilled chicken was still an option made my mouth grumble loudly but I pretended to cough.
“Brocolli?” The word came out higher than I intended. I hated the taste of it for a long time.
Connor’s eyebrow lifted.

Maria smiled. “Yes. It’s very nutrient–dense. And no more potatoes for now.”
“You removed potatoes?” I squeaked.
Both of them looked at me. Connor’s second eyebrow joined the first.

I immediately tried to backtrack, forcing a weak smile. “I mean… never mind. I needed a break from them anyway. Potatoes and I were getting too attached. It was an unhealthy relationship. This is fine.”
Connor made a quiet sound that might have been a suppressed snort and went back to scrolling on his phone.
Okay, I got a reaction from him, even if it was miniscule.
That was progress!!!
Maria kept going, clearly determined to finish the list. “We’ve also replaced the fruit juice with plain water or unsweetened milk. Cheese is limited to a small portion of low–fat cottage cheese if you need extra protein.”
I slumped slightly in my chair. “No toast at all?”
“No toast,” she affirmed kindly. “Wholegrain options can come later, once your body adjusts. For now Alpha Connor wants everything simple and clean.”
“Empty calories were my friends,” I muttered under my breath, trying not to glare at Connor.
Why did he have to take it out on food?
Connor looked up at me. “What was that?”
“Nothing.” I sat up straighter and tried to look mature. “This all sounds… very responsible. I can already feel myself becoming a better person.”
Maria beamed, placed the final glass of cold plain milk in front of me, and gave my shoulder a light pat.
“There’s more egg white if you finish that. I’ll leave you both to eat.”
