I would have folded my hands on my chest and stared back at him smugly but my entire focus was on standing there and staying unaffected.
How could I go from wanting him to hating him in a loop was a mystery in itself.
“You need to be able to withstand this,” he elaborated, “without flinching, without submitting, and without your knees deciding to have opinions about it.”
Before I could interrupt he raised a finger to stop me from doing exactly that.
“Because at the trial, one of the elders, Johansson, most likely, is going to test exactly this. Whether you can stand in front of an Alpha’s authority and hold your ground. Or just find some other way of torturing you like he did with me.”
I stared at him. “And you couldn’t have mentioned this before we walked into a random field?”
“You were the one who wanted to train for the trial?” he countered.
I opened my mouth to argue and then, honestly reconsidered my words. “I didn’t know it would be like this.”
“Exactly, now focus”
I huffed, and the pressure around me shifted subtly like a hand pressing slightly harder against my sternum, and I felt my breath catch again.
“That’s…you just made it worse,” I winced.
“It was level zero first,” he corrected. “And it’s level one now. You’re going to need to hold this level. And then we will gradually move up from there until you can stand in front of it and not bow instinctively.”
“That sounds impossible.”
“It’s not impossible,” he assured me. “But it’s uncomfortable as hell.”
My father was a gentle giant, at least to me, and I had never needed to submit to anyone. Being an alpha’s daughter meant I wasn’t subjected to alpha heirs and their egoistic auras easily either.
But now I wondered if I should have gotten a taste of it, just so that I didn’t look so clueless in front of Connor.
That made a question pop in my mind.
“But I don’t even belong to your pack, why is your aura affecting me?”
He had been looking at a distance but whipped his head at me, staring at me as if I truly had asked that.

“Because…” he seemed to choose his words carefully. “…your wolf wants to submit to me. I thought I already clarified that.”
I groaned in my head.
“I mean… we don’t have a bond yet, no connection, we are not mates or anything, we are fake dating at best. Shouldn’t it be harder for your aura and alpha power to affect me?”
His eyes narrowed just a little and I felt a shot of pain burst through somewhere behind my skull.
“Ow“. I winced and my hands flew towards my head immediately.
“Fight it”
Even those with wolves found it hard to resist an alpha’s command and here he was, expecting me, a gir with a latent wolf to learn it in five minutes.
I forced my eyes back up, furious, and found his gaze steady, patient, entirely too calm given that I could feel my own pulse hammering somewhere behind my ribs.
“I affect you…because you want me to. You let me mark you…in a way”
“That’s bull…”
I couldn’t even finish the sentence as the pressure increased again, building up slowly and deliberately, like a giant rock weighing a ton was trying to bury me deep into the ground.
“Fuck!” I groaned, my eyes going momentarily white.
“Plant your feet, push back!” He ordered and I instinctively did it, my body following the command even when I didn’t order it to do so.
“Try looking away”
I planted my feet, digging the heels of my shoes in the forest ground, and refused to look away no matter how badly some ancient, traitorous part of me wanted to drop my eyes to the ground and offer my throat like a good, well–behaved wolf.
The pressure eased for a second and I hurtled backward like a stone suddenly dropped from a cliff.
Connor made no move to help me as I struggled to find my balance and stopped short of face planting myself in the dirt.
I did, however, smack my face onto a nearby branch and angrily swatted it away, dusting the leaves and twigs it showered on me as a result.
“There’s something else you should know,” he leaned back on the rock, his voice steady even as the air around us thickened further.
“Wonderful,” I managed to smile. “More rules.”
I ignored how my wolf was getting all worked up, all hot and bothered to feel Connor standing so clos and his aura pressing down on her.

He had never used it on me, on us before but goodness, it felt like my wolf was going to claw her way out of my body just to fall to his feet.
It was exceptionally mortifying.
“When an Alpha issues a command,” he explained, “your wolf wants to obey instantly without thinking It’s not something you choose to do deliberately because it’s something that happens to you, and in your body, before your mind catches up. Had your wolf been fully awakened…. it would have been much more harder”
Why did the Moon Goddess have to make this even more miserable?
“Why did you even let me take the meds earlier?” I asked, breathless now, sweat prickling at my hairline despite the cool morning air.
He could have done a thousand things already, made me bow to him, made me obey him without having to move a muscle.
“We didn’t know Johanson would shift his focus on you.”
“But…” He cut me off and said instead.
“Now try to fight the next command I give you. Ready?” I barely had the time to nod when he said in a loud and clear voice. “Take a step forward”
I felt an actual, physical pull, following which my foot twitched against the grass, some invisible current urging my whole body forward toward him like gravity had shifted and tilted the entire forest in his direction.
“No,” I shook my head, planting my heel down hard, fighting it with everything I had.
“I said, take a step forward,” he repeated, and this time the pull was much stronger and insistent.
I felt my knee actually bending before I caught it, wrenched it back straight through sheer force of will.
I was pretty sure I would have multiple fractures and broken bones by the time this was over.
“And I…said…no,” I gritted out.
“Good,”
The word surprised me more than anything and I looked at him keenly, catching myself wanting to see approval and pride on his face.
I wanted him to be proud of me, I wanted to please him…or my wolf did, I couldn’t differentiate anymore.
That realization made something distracting and unwelcome to my stomach but before I could dis further, another order came crashing on me.
