“Are you really challenging me right now?” he asked, his voice going dangerously low as he took a step

closer.

The space between us began shrinking with every word until his shoulder brushed the tree bark right beside my head.

I should have shut up. Every reasonable instinct I had said back down.

“Or I’ll go tell Alpha Asher about your lie, about our lie and that will cost you your alpha candidature,” I said instead, chin tilted up, refusing to give him an inch.

“I’ll storm into his room in this exact outfit while being covered in dirt. I’ll introduce myself as your trainee and describe in detail how you fed me a bottle of what I can only assume was liquid despair.”

Something flickered across his mouth which was not quite a smile, but close enough to count. “You wouldn’t dare risk losing Aaron over whatever has gotten into you right now.”

“Try me.”

The thought of Aaron had not even crossed my mind and I was too ashamed to admit it.

“You can barely stand.” Connor pointed out.

“I stood up to shove you on your ass ten minutes ago,” I countered, patting myself on the shoulder.

He studied me for a long moment, close enough that I could feel the warmth radiating off him, and for one traitorous second I hoped he might actually reconsider.

“Y–your wolf…he…he claimed me in the hospital just after you woke up, I know you can’t risk angering him either”

Connor cocked an eyebrow. “Unlike you, I know how to keep my wolf in check”

Then his phone buzzed again in his pocket, and whatever brief opening I’d carved out closed right back

“So if you are done with your antics I have to go,” he said, stepping back.

“Connor! What about your injuries? Do you not need to go visit the doctor again? He must have asked you to rest as well.”

“I am fine,” he said, already walking toward the mansion.

“Are you doing this to punish me?” I blurted out, stalling for time, forcing my brain to come up with a good enough reason to make him stay.

My wolf was going mad in my head thinking that he was going to spend the night with another woman, work or not.

And I didn’t want to waste the rest of my day, trying to calm her down, especially because he had asked me to stay away from the medicines.

How was I supposed to do that?

He stopped in his tracks at that question. “The training session is over, I am not punishing you

I crossed the distance between us in a few strides, looking up at him with a mix of frustration/and pure yearning.

“But you are. You didn’t return last night after our fight, I don’t know where you were or what you did the entire night and now you plan to disappear again.”

He looked at me for a second, his eyes searching mine and I wished he would just empty out all his frustration on me instead of giving me this cold treatment.

“Drink the other bottle. I’ll see you tomorrow for the training again.”

“Not tonight?” I asked hopefully, my wolf clawing at my heart and brain.

“I have to go for a work dinner.”

“It’s a celebration,” I corrected him. “You don’t celebrate contracts. You sign them and move on with your life like a normal businessperson.“

“Some clients like ceremonies.”

“Some clients,” I said a bit warily, “sound suspiciously fond of you on the phone.”

He glanced sideways at me, something amused flickering behind his eyes. “Are you interrogating me?”

“I’m gathering information.”

“For what purpose?”

“Trial preparation,” I answered with as much dignity as I could muster while jogging slightly to keep pace with him. “I need to understand every variable that might distract you from training me properly. Mystery women asking for work dinner count as a variable.”

“That’s a stretch.”

“I’m very thorough.”

He still hadn’t given me the name of the girl he was meeting. Maybe, he was purposefully baiting me, relishing my wolf’s anguish if he was so damn smart and knew everything.

This was no doubt another way to teach me a lesson.

Whatever happened to yelling at me?

We reached the side entrance to the mansion, and I was still building momentum on my next argument when Aaron appeared in the doorway.

He was wiping his hands on a towel, a gym bag slung over one shoulder like he’d just finished his ov

workout somewhere else entirely.

a, he waved at me, his face brightening immediately. “Didn’t know you were into fitness”

“I’m not,” I began but he came closer and his bag thumped to the flood with a soft thud.

“Oh my Goddess, are you okay?”

He approached me and began dusting my face and clothes. “Why do you look like you were mauled by a bear?”

I was only half paying attention to our conversation, my gaze on Connor. Usually, he would grow so protective and arrogant whenever Aaron showed up.

But he was again busy with his goddamn phone.

“I’m okay, just fell into a dirt patch” I answered, half–distracted, still trying to keep one eye on Connor over Aaron’s shoulder.

“And what is this?” He was inspecting my arm now. “You are covered in scratches and several small cuts.”

“Its nothing”

“Oh come on” He grabbed my hand. “You need to get those cuts cleaned and checked for possible infection. Come, lets go to the pack hospital“:

He had already started dragging me away and for the split second that I looked away, Connor disappeared from the hall.

Where did he go?

“Aaron, relax its nothing” I wriggled my hand free out of his grasp. “Besides, I think I need to shower first”

I climbed the stairs up hastily feeling certain Connor had gone to our room.

“But Sia…”

“Later Aaron”

I excused myself from Aaron mid–sentence and hurried up to the room, hoping I’d catch him changing, hoping I’d have one more chance to make my case, but found it completely empty.

His closet was half open and a hanger was swinging a bit, telling me he had just come here to change and left without a word.

My first thought was to go check his office because I was feeling this increasingly intense fear, blame my wolf, about a girl I didn’t even have a name for.

If I just took the meds without his knowledge, I would be fine. Or so I hoped.

Or I could storm in his office but then my gaze fell on my reflection and I was startled to see it at first.

The girl in the mirror was covered in sweat, dirt sticking to her on every bit of exposed skin and hai sticking out from every angle.
